“Excellent service and stay”
Reviewed 11 December 2012

Loved our stay at Hanza hotel. It was within walking distance of the Old City. Very good rooms with luxurious bathrooms and good size beds. We booked 3 double rooms and one single room, but could easily have fitted all seven of us in one of the double rooms. Nice neighbourhood. Staff helpful and positive. We ended up staying in the Hanza pub one night and had a great time with food and drinks.

This really is a fantastic hotel, and excellent value for money. This is not a four or five star hotel - but it is much, much better than most other three star hotels. It is surprisingly bright and modern, and the staff seem keen to help. Rooms are very clean but basic (no mini fridge etc). As is standard with many similar hotels the double bed is two singles with a double mattress top, but this is hardly noticeable at all. The staff are very efficient and friendly, provided us with helpful advice and accommodated special requests without fuss. The new spa facility opened in October 2012 and is really excellent - very stylish and clean. The price is not included but is very reasonable. Breakfast buffet has plenty of variety, good quality and is available until midday. The room for breakfast could be crowded if the hotel is full, but was fine in November. The location is fine - a run-down neighbourhood with interesting buildings, but felt very safe even at night, and is only a few minutes walk to the station area (well lit all the way).

i am a wheelchair user and had a lovely room facing the wooden chapel on the little square. according to my colleagues, this is a special room, because their rooms were small, facing an inner court.

pros:
- my room was spacious enough and nicely furnished with a cosy athmosphere.
- good hotel restaurant
- clean
- nice and helpful staff

cons:
- the bed was way too small for two persons.
- folding shower stool is extremely small and positioned in front of wall handles and no armrests, which makes it almost impossible to sit and use the shower. it is impossible to use an extra stool, because the floor is very slippery. this situation is extremely uncomfortable.
- the usual tiny litter bin with foot pedal
- no hangers for the towels, but a shelve above the toilet unreachably high.
- no shelves on the wall for your sanitary tools.
- breakfast room unreachable for wheelchair users, so enjoy an intimate breakfast with yourself in your room
- situated in the old russian quarter, which is very run down. very limited infrastructure nearby.

Room Tip: choose a room facing the chapel in front.

I have stayed at the Hanza in Riga on two occasions with my girlfriend. The hotel is in a great location for the city centre which is only a few minutes walk away. Public transport links are good and the railway station is about 5 minutes walk. The hotel is very well presented, as are the staff who are all very friendly and helpful. The rooms are well decorated and the fixtures and fittings are all of a high standard. The rooms and the hotel in general are very clean. We stayed on a bed and breakfast basis, and breakfast was served in the downstairs bar/diner area. It was very nice, very good food and plenty of it. I will certainly stay at the Hanza on my next visit to Riga. All in all a very good hotel, in a great location for the city centre and old town.

Our standard room was super clean but not much more to it than that; very basic with desk, chair, TWIN beds (despite having booked as double) and bathroom. The breakfast room is far too small for the number of rooms in the hotel and is therefore always crowded.

Room Tip: Our standard room was facing the courtyard and had absolutely no view.

Don`t you never staying at Hanza Hotel! Hotel maid had complained that our room smelled of tobacco, and we would have smoked also in the hallway. In addition we are accused of partying into the early hours. None of us even smoke!!!! In the evenings we had dinners in the restaurant at Old Town and then we came to the hotel to sleep. The hotel charged us a penalty payments and we haven`t had any opportunity to defend ourselves. So don`t go to this hotel, because you're going to get scammed!! In addition the hotel's restaurant is so small that there isn`t any place to sit; we had to wait standing for the release of sites. The hotel was a complete disaster!! Fortunately the holiday was otherwise a success in Riga and we didn`t give Hanza Hotel to spoil it.

Dear Markku U,

Thank you very much for staying at Hanza Hotel and for your comments on our hotel.

Actually, we have to correct some information; Hanza Hotel is 100% non-smoking hotel and in our opinion it is unacceptable to smoke in the room. You were warned not to smoke, but not charged for smoking in the room.

When our valued clients check- in, all the linnen in the rooms are fresh and cleean. Our hotel does not fine anybody without a reason, but if there are burned holes in the bedcover, we do ask to cover the cost of a new bedcover.

We highly recommend all our clients to explore beautiful Riga during the day and also the nightlife in the Old Town. But if we receive complaints from other clients about very loud neighbours who do not allow to have a proper rest to others, we do ask to respect it and not to party in the room during the night-time.

Best regards,
Aigars Gerhards

We stayed at Hanza hotel for three nights and each night we ended up downstairs at the Hanza pub! Lovely hearty food, friendly staff and cozy atmosphere! Nice to relax after exploring all day! Not far from the old town, which is really nice!
