I say this hotel is a hidden gem. Hidden, because it's located outside old town, in a historic district called Maskavas. This district used to be the russian district and later on during the war, the jewish ghetto. At first sight looks a bit scary, if you don't know the history, but it's safe and great to walk around and see the old wooden houses (protected heritage). The Latvian Academy of Science, jewish monument and Riga ghetto museum are in walking distance from the hotel.
Gem, because it's modern inside contrasting the old beautiful facade. It has spacious rooms, modern bathroom facilities, good service, great breakfast and a spa(which I didn't visit). It's in a very quiet neighborhood and has parking on the street in front of the hotel and the church.
If it wasn't for Hanza Hotel I wouldn't have visited the Maskavas district. You should look for "Maskavas district" on Wikipedia before booking the hotel.
If you like history and don't mind being outside the old city, this is the perfect hotel for you.
