“excellent value for money”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 January 2009

I travelled with a friend and got a twin room, B&B, at Hanza Hotel thanks to Expedia. In addition to a great offer (almost as cheap as hostels) we got breakfast and found a perfect value for money.
No fancy services or furniture but very clean and in order hotel, it seems recently renovated. Complete breakfast buffet. 20 min by bus to airport, 5 min walk to bus and train station/zeppelin market, 2-3 more min walk to center.
The hotel is slightly isolated as in a very quiet street but walking back to the hotel at night is not scary as streets are well lighted and the market to be crossed is guarded.
Go for it, for sure a great deal in a great city waking up in EU!

Whilst the walk to the 'actual' city centre is only 7 minutes away, this hotel is situated in the questionable part of town. In fact the receptionist at the hotel discouraged us from walking outside after dark. And being in Riga in December, after dark meant 3:30pm.

Now for some good news:
- the staff: excellent
- the room: clean, a little small but overall above average
- the bathroom: excellent
- the restaurant: average

Other good things about the hotel:
- free internet
- cheap airport tranfers

What's the worst thing that could happens to a smoke-enemy? Yes... staying in a smoking room (n. 204) with a terrible stink of cigarettes in the air, in the bed and towels, everywhere. No chance to change the room 'cause the hotel was full so we had to stay there and suffer a lot.
The room was good, large enough with modern furnitures and bathroom. The shower has been another problem: water temperature was continuosly changing hot-cold-hot and was impossible to set the right temperature!
Location isn't in the heart of the downtown but the walking to reach it wasn't a problem: 15 minutes are enough and there's the chance to visit the central market, with plenty of goods.
A positive note came from the breakfast which was served in the pub: a wide range of fresh food and drinks, enough to reach the evening.

I stayed in room 305 from 1 - 5 December 2008. The room was clean and well equipped with a small desk, a couple of chairs, adequate storage and cable TV - although not many English language channels. The bathroom was modern with shower, hairdryer and toiletries. The bed itself was comfortable but it appeared that the sheets were too small as they couldn't be tucked in so tended to move around and get crumpled up. Also I would have liked larger towels in the bathroom- but then again maybe I should get smaller!! A useful addition would be tea/coffee making facilities. I paid 134 Lats for my 4 night stay.
I made my reservation directly with the hotel by e-mail and this was dealt with very efficiently.
It was midnight when I arrived at the hotel but I was warmly greeted and the check-in procedure was quick and efficient. The front desk staff spoke excellent English and were very helpful with tourist information.
Breakfast was served in the cosy basement restaurant. It was plentiful with a good variety of cereals, bread, cheese, cold meats, sausages, eggs, bacon, fruits, yoghurt etc. The orange juice however was not fresh but tasted more like an orange flavoured powder mixed with water. Other than breakfast I didn't eat in the hotel so cannot comment on other meals.
The hotel is a 10 - 15 minute stroll from the old town, en route you pass Stockmann Department store, a shopping centre and the Central Market all useful for stocking up on drinks and snacks. Other reviewers have mentioned that the area around the market is a bit intimidating at night, whilst I agree that it doesn't look particularly nice, it is a busy area and there is usually a lot of activity day and night so it is unlikely that you would be walking through this area alone. I as an older lone traveller found it perfectly safe, just keep your wits about you. The stop for the bus to the airport is also located in this area.
Overall a welcoming, value for money hotel in a central location which I would be more than happy to stay in again.

The hotel located near the centre of Riga. The staff are exceptionally friendly. The check-in and out was quick and easy.

The rooms are clean with very comfortable beds. You can have multifarious drinks and foods at Hanza Pub. The main thing are the friendly and quickly service.

Breakfast is a buffet style with a wide range of hot and cold choices.

There are the internet (free access) and city-introducing-program in the reception.

We were satisfied with the hotel and enjoyed.

We stayed in the Hanza for three nights in early December 2008. I would agree with most of the positive comments already posted in previous reviews regarding the staff, cleanlyness etc.

Some points to note re the hotel:- 1) The hotel is a good 15 min walk from the old town, a walk that either takes you through the central market or via a few underpasses. In the night the walk may be regarded as a little eiree and may not be suitable for all. 2) Bedrooms - if you require a double bed, ensure that you request one during booking as the general internet sites may not state whether it will be a double or twin room. 3) Breakfast - this is served in the Hanza pub which is quite small. If the hotel is busy then get there early to ensure you dont have to wait for a table. The selection is fairly good and was constantly replenished (although some of the hot offerings of boiled and scrambled eggs were not topped up that often), but if your early then all of the selection will be there.

There are many more hotels in central locations, but this hotel was very good value and very quiet for a good nights sleep.

Some advice re Riga: 1) We used a hotel transfer mini bus from the airport at 3Lats per person - this was good value and very quick. If there are 3 or more then a taxi will be cost neutral or cheaper. We were glad we took this option rather than the service bus as it would not have been nice trying to find the hotel in the night. We did use the service bus No 22 for the return to the airport - its about 300-400m from the hotel and costs 0.4lats per person/bag which was really cheap. 2) Restauraunt - we found a superb little place (called something like Domini Caan) on Skarnu Iela just behind St Peter's Church. The food was superb and extremely good value compared to other places and the atmosphere really nice. Wine was expensive, but wine nearly everywhere was. 3). Pub - we went to the Medieval Pub which was just off Kramu Iela. Beers were 2.5 lats which was quite expensive, but the place is really nice and relaxing and warm - perfect for a stop-off on a cold day. 4) Central market - go there to have a browse - and be tempted by the dirt cheap cake stalls!!

We were in Riga for 3 full days, but 2 would have been enough given its size. December is a nice time to go with the christmas markets etc - but take thermals!!

This is certainly a hotel to consider if you're visiting Riga. It's located in the centre of Riga and very convenient for restaurants, shops, and sites. The staff are exceptionally welcoming and friendly. The check-in and out was quick and easy, one of teh best I have seen.

The rooms are large, spotlessly clean with very comfortable beds. Only one thing missing for me, a kettle and a minibar, but you can have drinks at Hanza Pub. The main thing was the curteous service, helpful people and good quality rooms.

Breakfast, always a sign of a good hotel, is served in the Hanza Pub' its a buffet style with a wide range of hot and cold choices. If you decide you want breakfast, I'd suggest before 9.30 because after that everyone seemed to arrive which made it too crowded for me. All in all, we enyojed the Hanza Hotel, a pleasant place to stay and a surprise at the price, a gem.
