“A very nice Christmas”
Reviewed 6 January 2012

We spent our Christmas eve in Hotel Avalon in Riga. The Hotel is directly next to the beautiful old town, everything is in walking distance. The rooms were clean but not too big and the staff was very nice and helpful. The restaurant (dinner as well as the breakfast) is excellent as is the bar. We really couldn't find something bad, only the restaurant could have been separated from the lobby better. Unfortunately the rooms are not looking to the city, nevertheless it is almost always a good idea to ask for a top floor room.
For a sightseeing stay in Riga the Avalon Hotel is a perfect choice. Do not miss to visit the skybar on top of the Radisson Blu hotel when staying in Riga.

This hotel is right on the edge of Old Town. In front of the hotel is a main road, a tram line and the main railway. Old Town is behind the hotel. Sound proofing against outside noise is, however, just about perfect. Sound proofing against internal noise is not. All the rooms are based around a central atrium. When they had a party in the lobby area, it was like having a band outside the room door and we were on the 6th floor.
The room was modern and well equipped. Staff could not do enough for us. Breakfast could have been better - we stayed at the Radisson Hotel Latvija the day before we came here and their breakfast was much better.

Room Tip: Get as high a floor as possible.

Was there in november 2011 on a business seminar.
Rooms were okay, but nothing more than okay. Bathroom looked nice at first view, but on further inspection you could see the cracks, and the marks. Had a nice deep bathtub, but the shower had no water pressure what so ever, which made it very difficult to rinse out shampoo from hair when showering.
Room had iron, minibar (with only drinks, no snacks) and phone. WIFI was free and worked as it should all through the stay¨.

The biggest let-down was the food. Breakfast was okay, had some good choice, pancakes and fruit was a plus.
Lunch and dinner on the other hand was terrible, old potatoes, poor selection of food, dry meat.. will definately suggest to have these meals outside the hotel.

and on the last note; it would be nice if the staff actually smiled, just once in a while...

We loved the Hotel Avalon and being in Riga. The location on the edge of the old town was excellent, and just around the corner from a friendly Italian Bistro. We booked through the 1bigeurope web site and got a better price than booking direct. We stayed four nights and had a free meal thrown in each night, though the first night we arrived after they had finished serving.
We ate in the restaurant on the second night (Saturday)and found the food quality excellent, though it did take nearly three hours from being seated to receiving our deserts! The final night we used the voucher again, and had much better service. Not surprisingly it was much quieter on a Monday.
The room was great, spacious and clean. the staff were friendly and in the communal areas there seemed to be be a cleaner in constant attendance maintaining the highest standards. The amazing markets were just cross the road (looked like a railway station) and were a brilliant experience. There was free internet access using the hotel's computer in the foyer.
The reception staff were very helpful and even called a different cab company for us, as the one we wanted to use was cheaper than the Hotel's usual company. Nothing was too much trouble.

Just returned from 4 nights at the Avalon. Firsty visit to Riga. Lovely city lots to see and do. Hotel is so centrally placed. From airport easy enough to get bus but if you have any mobility issues would recommend a taxi straight to front door as you may have to negiotate the underpasses with a case. Do check your room has a separate shower as most have showers over bath and this can be hard to access with any mobility issues. The hotel is very good. The staff are superb. Buffet breakfast is excellent with great choice and the evening meals are also superb. A lift takes you up to the 8 floors and there is a good view of the city from the terrace on Floor 6. Rooms are sound-proofed. Enjoy Riga as we did.

Stayed here for 5 nights in October. Great location minutes from winding streets of old town. Airport bus will drop you off across the road at the Stockman department store-cross by underpass and walk back . Bus for the airport leaves from the stop outside hotel.0.70L one way. Journey takes about 30 mins.

Very comfortable rooms of a decent size, Superb breakfast with a fabulous choice was included in the price.Helpful staff on reception.

Would deffinately stay here again.

The Avalon is easy to get to from Riga airport. Use the Number 22 bus from outside the airport, it costs 0.70 lats for a single journey. The bus had an LED display inside which shows the next stop - get off at 'stockmann'. The journey takes around 30-40mins.

When we arrived at the hotel we were told there was a problem with our booking and we would have to move to a different hotel. Apparently the booking information hadn't reached the hotel through the Internet booking agency we used. However, we stood our ground and a room was found. The couple checking in after us had the same problem, they had used a different booking agency from us but were given the same reason. They did have to move hotels and were told by the new hotel that it happens all the time.

The room was clean and a decent size. There are no tea/coffee making facilities in the rooms.

The buffet breakfast provided lots of choice and is excellent value.

The old town is easily accessed and walking back to the hotel at night felt safe enough.

There is free wi-fi all over the hotel.
