“Amazing, even in the winter”
Reviewed 2 February 2013

We visited just before New Year's Eve and enjoyed our time there. The lake was frozen and the Christmas markets were still open. The castle is mostly rebuilt, but it is an easy walk from public transit and worth the admission fee.

To visit from Vilnius use the Bus Station platforms 6/7/8/28/29. Buy your ticket on the bus.

Trakai is an exclusively unique place. It is an important historical site which crown jewel is beautiful medieval castle built on an island in the middle of the lake Galve. Eco-tourism fans would appreciate opportunity to rent a boat and discover interconnecting lakes surrounded by forests. The Island and Peninsula Castles which are nestled in lake land is a very romantic and absolutely overwhelming site. Trakai is only 25km away from Vilnius and can be easily reached by car, train or bus. After a hike and sightseeing I strongly recommend to try traditional Karaite meat pastries - "kibinai"!

Been to many castles around this part of europe... this is probably the most beautiful.. been here numerous times... in winter and summer. Winter offers a really gorgeous white tipped castle in the background and in summer a really beautiful setting for weddings.. u will see alot of that on any given weekend in summer.

“The castle is the high-point of the visit to Trakai”
Reviewed 4 August 2012

In addition to the castle, there are other fortifications, and surrounding lakes and towns. From the official website, "Trakai Historical National Park is highly populated with 14,000 people and lies only three kilometres away from the nation’s capital"

The high-point is a visit to the restored castle, with the surrounding towns, lakes, and old fortifications being only a pleasant distraction for the primary reason for visiting Trakai. We went on a Saturday, and it seems this is a favorite wedding location and is visited by thousands of residents from Vilinius.

“Camping in Trakai (Lake Galve)”
Reviewed 23 July 2012

We stayed in our camper van at the Slenis campsite on the shores of lake Galve. Excellent campsite with very good and clean facilities.
Nice beach on the lake for swimming in. Very quiet at night even though the site was busy.
A short drive or cycle into Trakai town and the medieval castle.
Generally very nice country with very nice people.
The very 'Eastern European' looking photographs on the Slenis campsite web site don't do it justice at all.
