Our stay in this beautiful home was memorable.
The richness and colors of the gardens, and the warmth of the house simply made our stay perfect!
Count Calheiros is the most wonderful host, attentive and cordial at all times.
His home is filled with light, as well as his gardens, and it is obvious that this is a place loved by the people who live in it.
The view from there to the valley around was breathtaking.
We warmly suggest to anyone traveling to Portugal to go to this very special corner of heaven and enjoy it as much as we did (and try the delicious local wine!).

I had to give it an average because there were exceptional qualities and some not so good. The I was recently on a walking trip to Portugal and we stayed here for two nights. Count Calheiros was wonderful, charming and attentive! The grounds themselves were lovely, with beautiful views of Ponte de Lima. The Count is working hard to make this a wonderful destination. The downside is the beds were hard as rocks with very old bedding. Our blankets look like they hadn't been washed in a year. The other down side was the food. Very boring and not so good. The only exceptional dish was a fabulous chocolate mousse. The best we had in all of Portugal. The wine can't compare to the wonderful wines of the Douro Valley. On the other hand we had locals come and play music and it was a lovely evening dancing with them. Also we had lovely aperitifs with the count and he was so gracious to let us see his wonderful home. So an excellent for the location and the Count and poor for the food and the beds.

Room Tip: Do not stay in the converted "horse stables."

Little did we realize when we arrived that we would be hosted by Count Calheiros himself in this gorgeously restored manor home. Not sure if this happen with everyone, but we had aperitifs with the count who showed us all over his incredible home that has been in the family for 600 years.
Then to dinner in a grand room with silver candelabras & a fire in the magnificent fireplace, with Francesco Calheiros entertaining us graciously throughout the evening. Truly a taste of Portugal that we will never forget.
The house is so well preserved, you can see that years of love & work have gone into every detail. And the gardens...ahhhhh...and the pool & the stables & & next morning after breakfast the Count showed us around the whole estate. The views over the Minho area...so lovely.
You feel as if you are the guests of the owners in their estate, not like you are staying in a hotel or even a B&B.
Drove thru little town of Ponte de Lima which looked charming but did not get to visit.

This Portuguese stately home owned by the Count of Calheiros has been welcoming guests for over 20 years, whilst the Count's decision to open his house was certainly economic it has also provided him with an opportunity to share the history of this fine house with many visitors whilst, at the same time, promoting the region to a wider audience. You shouldn't expect a hotel but nevertheless the rooms are very comfortable and the studio apartments in the garden, where we stayed, are well constructed. Guests can use lounge facilities in the house and are likely to be shown round by the owner and told about the history which spans some seven centuries in the same location under the family's ownership. The house itself is 18th Century.

Views are wonderful, including from the very pleasant swimming pool. Breakfasts are delicious and feature local produce. The place may be grand but there is a very relaxed, informal and friendly atmosphere. The family coat of arms includes scallop shells and walking poles alluding to the importance of Ponte de Lima as the historic crossing point on the Portuguese Camino to Santiago. This trail can still be walked today, starting in Porto. A delightful area and a delightful place to stay. Highly recommended.

In mid-September the spectacular gardens were full of fruit and flowers... this property is beautiful. Rooms were charming, interesting and old fashioned (in the main house) or charming enough and a bit bland (the new wing in the former stables) but all were spotless and comfortable and the gardens and terraces are exceptional. Breakfast was great. I highly recommend it.

Reviewed 28 November 2009

I recently had the opportunity to spend a delightful evening in this 16th/17th century manor house, which was renovated in 1986. This house has been in the family since the 1300s, and since the family lives in the manor, one gets a very comfortable quiet relaxed homely feeling. the highlight of the visit was a tour by the owner's son, Francisco. He took the time to give us a 2 hour walk around the 50 acre estate. We only had breakfast, but the orange juice, straight from the orchard, was the best we had on or 4 week trip of spain/portugal. We finished off a whole pitcher, much to the dismay of the very friendly staff. The manor is located outside of Ponte De Lima, but make sure you get explicit driving instructions. The manor was not easy to find due to the fact that there is no obvious sign. Without a doubt, this was the best accomodation we had on our 1 month trip.
