Our first time in a Pousada, we were recommended by a friend and a very good experience so far. A blend of history with modern hospitality. Breakfast whilst very busy - was fresh and plenty of variety. Our suite is well equipped and extremely comfortable. The staff have been very professional - polite and a accommodating to all our requests. Great location within Tavira and would strongly recommend booking rather than the standard Brand Hotels.

We are fans of Pousadas and their staff- and this one in particular which we have visited several times and previously reviewed highly ( April 2012). This was the first time we had visited when the weather was hot and it was a lovely experience to have breakfast outdoors in the cloisters.

Previously we had always managed to book the special suite ( reasonable price outside peak periods) but this time it was booked so we had suite number 13. This room needed refurbishment and in the short term some maintenance :-
The underneath of the toilet seat was a disgrace -all peeling and stained
The sealing around the bath had come away allowing dirt to build up in the cracks
The bedroom carpet was stained and needed a shampoo
An electrical wire was loose and hanging down over the bedroom/lounge dividing door

I know there is a lack of cash in Portugal but the above is low level maintenance that local management should be on top of - perhaps having a routine inspection of rooms themselves - this in management speak is called 'ownership'.
What Pestana/Portuguese state cannot continue to do is to offer rooms like this with a rack rate of over £200 per night.

Room Tip: If you can stretch to it the Special Suite

Staff are wonderful - very friendly and helpful. The hotel is a ancient convent but designed as a 5 star hotel. Prices for food and drinks are not expensive for this quality of accommodation. Easy downhill walk into the centre of town. Many interesting restaurants and bars serving good quality food.

Room Tip: Go for a large room in the old building

Overall the hotel was quite good in terms of the rooms and environment. However the service at the bar was very slow. The other issue was the lack of umbrellas around the pool which was a problem when we went. I know another couple complained but were not really given any reassurance that anything would be done. Summer would be a nightmare in the heat they expect.

I was a bit concerned about the middle of town location, but the hotel was quiet, beautiful, and elegant. The cloisters/courtyard was so beautiful and peaceful. Fabulous pool area. Excellent breakfast. Very professional, yet friendly staff. We thought dinner was good, not great.

My wife and I with some friends spent six nights at this hotel at the end of April early May. The historic building has been refurbished with much sensitivity and charm. The restaurant offers excellent Portuguese food. The pool although not huge is more than adequate and very pleasant.
It is the staff that made our stay more memorable. Always friendly, courteous and professional.

The only down side was that the rooms were a little tired and the daily cleaning of the room fell short of what one could expect, although it was clean when we arrived.

The hotel is situated in a perfect location in Tavira.

I would not hesitate to return.

We stayed for just one night, splendid hotel, architectural marvellous restoration, spacious and clean room and surprise: as the lonely planet said the restaurant had upper class prices, we had a tasty lamb pie as a starter, sea bass as main course and a algarve pie as a dessert with a Douro white wine and bubbles with the "amuse gueules" for a 35 euro/pers and all that in a historical environment (bubbles were on the house due to my wife's birthday) Breakfast by contrast was somewhat less comparing to the Sagres poussada. Reception staff was outstanding.

Room Tip: There is some noise from the railway north of the hotel
