We had a really nice stay here. £300 for a week and we had a room with a balcony right overlooking the river. The staff were very friendly and helpful and extended our stay for us (which might not be so easy in high season). Simple rooms, funky bathroom, small ish but adequate room and the air con worked well which meant we could keep under the covers. There were a lot of mossies in Tavira because of the recent rain. We had lovely sunny weather, so we were lucky.
I would reccomend the hotel as good value and down to earth and in an excellant place on the river.
The next door restaurant is not run by them and is not good value or that good. However, our breakfasts provided from there featured delicious croissants which we loved. Orange juice not very good.

This is a traditional Portuguese hotel, situated right in the heart of the town next to the river. Free WiFi, but don't look for any chain hotel frills. The restaurant on the ground floor is apparently separately managed - we didn't eat there as they don't display their prices without being asked for a menu.

The hotel room was small, air conditioned and adequate - we weren't there to spend much time in the room anyway!

We're a couple, 31 and 27, from Norway, who stayed here for three nights.

Best thing about this hotel is without a doubt the location. Nestled right on the waterfront it provides a quaint and charming startingpoint for exploring the rest of Tavira.

Our room had a big balcony overlooking a narrow street with children playing in the street and locals going about their daily life. The room was clean, the bed was good, the bathroom roomy, there was AC and a small fridge.

Breakfast is included, but don't expect too much. Croissants, breadrolls, cheese&ham, cereal, coffee&tea. This is probably the real weakness of Mares, as the brekkie just seems....uninspired, I don't know. Anyway, there's HEAPS of possible other brekkie places nearby, so just explore!

The restaurant that Mares shares the location with, is well above what I expected. The owner is this charming, really sympathetic fellow who knows how to treat a customer and the food is traditional and above par.

Another gem is the rooftop terrace. It has sunbeds and is a really great and private place to soak up the sun if the beach isn't your thing.

We booked in the high-season so naturally we didn't really feel that we got value for our money, but that's life sometimes.

To summarize, this is a laidback place with charm which was comfortable to stay at. It's close to the river and the rest of Tavira is easily accessible, plus the ferryboat to Tavira beach is 100m away. The hotel shares a location with a restaurant with good food, especially seafood, and the prices were reasonable. Don't expect much of breakfast though, it's basic but by no means really crappy. Just...basic.

This hotel was in the perfect place for the ferry to the beach (though it only goes from here in Juy/August) and right on the harbour, so ideal for strolling through the market and to riverside restaurants and cafes at night. The hotel itself is fine, nothing outstanding but nothing really bad either. It has character but you get the feeling they could do more with it if they tried. Our room was quite large with a balcony overlooking the harbour, and nice traditional features like handpainted tiles in the bathroom. The only complaint we had was the breakfast, as others have mentioned, which was average to poor - but it's included in the price and you can always go elsewhere if you want something more special. Tavira is lovely and this place makes a pretty good, reasonably priced base for a relaxing holiday.

stayed here for 6 nights in july and found the whole stay perfect ,for those looking for 5 star luxury then look somewhere else but if your looking for a traditional little portugese hotel with no mod cons then this is a gem ,rooms were clean and breakfast basic but all you needed ,location of hotel was the big plus right on river where you can watch fishermen going about there daily chores.

the restaurants that are adjacent to the hotel are okay but expensive for what you get ,a steak will cost you 17 euros bottle of wine 15,best to look up little back streets for local cafes where prices are cheap ,one little gem i found was vela 2 its a little local fish restaurant where when you arrive you get basket of bread ,then comes bowl of salad then bowl of boiled potatoes, next to arrive is the fish ,then more fish ,then more fish ,you have to tell the waitress to stop ,all this and 4 beers for 24 euros ,that is a bargain ,go exploring and find this little gem .

two places worth visiting for a drink are a little local cafe right next to hotel its called helena a small beer will cost you 80 cents and the staff owner marco and waitress oana will make you feel right at home infact oana is a bit of a singer ask her nicely she might just give you a blast.

to the other side of the hotel is a cocktail bar called pink flamingos where the cocktails are to die for best mojitos iv ever tasted and the owner and the waitress katia are a breth of fresh air ,a cocktail will cost you 5 euros which for the size of them is a bargain .

tavira can be as expensive or as cheap as you like ,if your on a budget stick to cafes where a beer will cost you 70 cents a bottle of decent red wine 5 euros ,go explore and enjoy , billy and julie from scotland

Right on the harbour/river front. We paid £45/night. Room on 2nd floor, with balcony. Not big but good enough. Quirky bathroom, everything working fine. Breakfast - inside their restaurant next to the crabs' aquarium, with all fridges doing their work quite loudly- is very simple but if you don't like it you can find enough other places.
We loved Tavira!

I've stayed at this hotel for one night so far. I found that the following items didn't work - air conditioning, phones and television. There is no elevator in the place so if you have a particularly heavy suitcase, you have your work cut out for you lugging it up the stairs to your room.

The breakfast was probably the worst I have had in Europe to date. There was no selection for buns/rolls, the cheapest of cheese slices, no choice for meat slices, no fresh vegetables like sliced tomatoes or cucumbers and then there was something that tasted like Tang instead of real orange juice, a few superannuated apples and that's it!

The restaurant suggests that you can get a 20%discount if you are a hotel guest. If you shop around, you will find that it's no bargain. Other restaurants are as good (or better) and cheaper, even when the discount is applied.

All in all, I wouldn't recommend this hotel to anyone.
