“Convenient Location”
Reviewed 27 November 2013

Selected this hotel based on a review in a Rick Steeves guidebook. The room was very basic and small with hardly enough space for the luggage. Just ok. However, as noted by other reviewers, the location is perfect for exploring Tavira. Enjoyed the breakfast as well.

We initially booked the hotel for two nights on foot of a recommendation from a friend of ours who had stayed there a couple of weeks prior to our visit and ended up staying for six nights! At first we were in a lovely double room overlooking the roofs of the old town but once a room became available with a beautiful balcony with a view of the river out front we were able to move there for the remainder of our visit. Both rooms were spotless, large and had very comfortable beds. The entire building was very pretty, with a wide staircase of polished wood and gorgeous tiles, and a wonderful rooftop terrace for enjoying the sun and the views. Breakfast was included in the price of the room and was a generous buffet of absolutely anything you might want for breakfast. We hired bikes for the duration of our stay and were able to keep them overnight in the hotel in a safe and easily accessable place. The staff were all very helpful and friendly and just around the corner there is a great indoor market area that would set you up with all you need for a picnic for the day. You can access a miles-long beach by a ferry leaving nearby or by cycling a couple of miles and get to it by a small land bridge. For those who want to do more than just hanging out in the town or on the beach, there are fantastic cycling opportunities along the 'ecovia' along the coast and along quiet county roads into the mountains behind the town. And after all that activity there's a great hot shower awaiting you in the hotel! While we were well set up with maps and guide books to explore the lesser advertised areas around the town we could recommend that the hotel - and the bicycle hire and the tourist office - would point out all the great places to explore in the vicinity. I am sure that many more people would extend their visit just like we did - and the Recidencial Mares is the perfect place from which to set out for your daily discoveries of an unspoilt and beautiful part of the Algarve! It's great for birdwatching all around the nearby marshes too!

If you are flying into Faro, make sure you hire a car. The drive from the airport is simple enough, although negotiating the streets of Tavira without a map can be challenging. Once we found the hotel, it was plain sailing. The lady on reception was very helpful and the room comfortable, with a view of the river a bonus. The buffet-style breakfast was excellent. The town itself is very clean and pretty. Everything is within walking distance although you can board the tourist 'road train' if you are feeling lazy. There are plenty of places to eat, some good, others indifferent. Expect to be accosted as you pass the Indian restaurants. Despite our love of curry, we decided that when in Tavira we would wnt to experience Portuguese food. We spent the first day exploring the town and the second visiting the island and its beautiful beach. From then on, we made full use of the hire car to discover the beautiful surroundings. This was our first experience of Portugal, and I'm sure won't be the last... and we would happily stay at the Residencial Mares again!

Room Tip: Go for a room on the riverfront!

Mares Residencial is above a restaurant of the same name by the river (although there are parked cars and a road between). Our room had a balcony overlooking a back street that provided a pleasant place to sit and view the rooftops. When we realised we had no towels these were quickly delivered with many apologies. Breakfast is served in the restaurant with the option of eating outdoors. It was a good continental breakfast including still warm hard boiled eggs.

My wife and I decided to try the eastern end of the algarve for this holiday, so we arrived in Tavira a wonderfull little town which has managed to hold on to its origins and historical values. We stayed at the Residencial Mares. This is an old portuguese property that has been totaly refurbished with 24 bedrooms, some with balconys overlooking the river. Our room was spotless and complete with air con and a small fridge handy to keep a few beers and water. The staff were always so friendly and helpfull. We took day trips nearly every day to Faro then Olhao then Villa Real San Antonio where we took the ferry across to Ayamonte where we spent the day enjoying the Spanish side of things.Tavira does not have a beach as such but something far more special,If you catch the ferry to Isla da Tavira which is about a five minute crossing, you will land on a beach that you only ever dream about. This beach seems to go as far as the eye can see, with pure white sand and pure peace and quiet, yet fully serviced by a campsite and restaurants juice bars etc.Tavira a perfect chillout holiday.

We stayed a week in a room with balcony overlooking the river - lovely view at any time of day. Staff very friendly and helpful. Rooms appear a bit dated, but in keeping with the local style. Shops, cafes, restaurants, market, and ferry to the beach all within minutes walk. We had read reports that the breakfasts were not too good but had no complaints ourselves.

Room Tip: Try to book a room with a view overlooking the river. Room 100 has a 2 balconies with this view - o...

We stayed here for 3 nights at the end of our holiday in Portugal. We were very happy with the service we received and the area that the hotel was in, being close enough to the town centre but just outside so to escape the hustle and bustle. The rooms are fairly basic but had wifi and air conditioning (both admittedly not great) at no extra cost. Breakfast was adequate but at a reasonable price. There is a decent selection of restaurants in the town, just a 2 minute walk away. The staff were also very helpful when organising airport transfer to Faro. A great location and highly recommended for a short break.
