This is a beautiful area of the world, and our room had a balcony from which we could see the falls and the mountains of the Jungfrau. It was gorgeous. The room itself was simple with no TV or phone, but we spent most of our time hiking in the beautiful area or on our balcony. The breakfast was simple but filling. The staff was the most helpful and friendly we encountered on our 21 day trip. We especially enjoyed and appreciated Doris’ helpful advice on what hikes to take and she always greeted us with a smile. This hotel was one of our favorites for our entire trip.

Hotel is a classic swiss building at the end of town. Town is small so walking from the train station is not an issue. Being at the end of the road gives great views of the valley. Hotels in the middle of town didnt have as good views. Rooms are simple but adequate. Balconies are nice but there are also great views from the breakfast room. Breakfast is good with plenty of food. Staff were very helpful in planning daily activities. A room to watch movies and read downstairs if you want. Internet downstairs but you have to pay. We had rain for part of our trip so decide how many days you want carefully. I wouldnt count on just one day to give you good weather. Mountain view trail on the Schilthorn side of the valley was a tiring but great hike. Food was very expensive in Switz so adjust your budget accordingly.

We just returned from a trip to Europe that included a (too short) stay at the Hotel Staubbach in the incredibly beautiful Berner Oberland. After being stuck in a traffic jam for 90 minutes on the drive to Lauterbrunnen, it was a relief to find the smiling and helpful Doris ready to check us in. We were a family of 12 traveling together including my parents who were celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary and my three young children.

Doris got us settled quickly into our rooms. We had a suite of rooms that had formerly been where the owners lived. It was quite spacious. We had been advised that the room had not been remodeled and that it was a bit rustic. While this was true, it was also scrupulously clean and well-maintained and we didn't mind the outdated decor or creaky floors. Once we opened the doors to our balcony, we were even more happy as we had an incredible view of the waterfall and surrounding mountains.

Doris was very helpful in directing us to restaurants, the train station and gave us some wonderful advice on a day trip after our early morning jaunt up the Jungfrau. As an added bonus, when Doris learned of my parents' anniversary, they arrived back in their room to find a lovely bouquet of flowers and a small bottle of champagne. Now, that's service that goes above and beyond.

The Berner Oberland is a truly incredible place to visit and I would highly recommend the Hotel Staubbach as a base of operations while exploring this lovely part of Switzerland.

I agree that the website makes the hotel look more "upscale" than it really is, but it does have a certain rustic charm.
The staff was kind and helpful.
Breakfast was unremarkable, but more than adequate.
The bathtub in our room was just what we needed after a day of hiking.
It is convenient and quiet.
We were very happy.

We loved our stay at the Staubbach, even though we saw more rain than we wanted to. The hotel is a great base for exploring the Berner Oberland and we would return here if ever we were to return to Lauterbrunnen.
The hotel is rated as a 2-star bed and breakfast, and that's about right. There are no televisions or telephones in the rooms, which is bliss !! ( Check out the Bakelite telephones in the corridors ! ) The location, as everyone says, is spectacular, although be prepared for everything closing in the town at a rather early hour - remember that you will be at the end of the tracks and road, as far as public transport is concerned.
Bedrooms differ in size, so I would recommend you ask for a big, corner room with valley/waterfall or valley/street/waterfall view. Also, the church outside the hotel deserves a mention. The bells ring out to mark every quarter hour during the day and after midnight or so, just every hour. At six a.m. or so, the bells start to ring out each quarter hour again. I wore ear plugs after two pretty sleepless nights but other guests reported not hearing them at all. Light sleepers should visit the Wengen pharmacy for those plugs ! We reserved a CHF150 double room and were pretty happy with it, although we thought we'd be getting the largest size for that money. No matter, it was ok for just the two of us. Beds were comfortable, although the pillows were a bit on the soft and heavy side. Linen and towels were always white and spotless and the rooms were cleaned well, every day. There is a small elevator in the centre of the building, should a day's hiking have taken it's toll on those poor, aching feet. The breakfast was excellent and perfect as a good start to the day. Hard-boiled eggs (red and yellow striped ones ! ); ham, cheese and salami; good, crusty bread; croissants; jams and yoghurt; several muesli-type cereals and plentiful coffee and orange juice.
There's a pay-internet facility and a tv room for the more sedentary amongst us and a notice board in the foyer which explains what is going on in the area, with regard to mountain and lake trips. The bar is not used as a bar but there is a small fridge in there that can be used to keep people's drinks and snacks cool.

Right then, that's the technical stuff taken care of.

As I stated previously, the hotel is being run as a two-star bed and breakfast. Myself and my partner, Janet would like to say that the staff are most definitely five-star. We can't say enough good things about these people but we'll attempt to at least offer a brief acknowledgement of their respective efforts.

Miriam - Manager : A smiling and ever-friendly presence who ran the place with understated charm. ( We hope the weather is always good for your weekly chill-boat trip ).
Doris and Ed : A well-travelled , dynamic duo whose love of life and each other never failed to lift the day. If you're seeking advice on the best walks and trips, seek out one of these two.
Mila - Reception : A daily, happy welcome at the desk.
Maria - At breakfast, this lady was a hive of activity and efficiency ( visit her beautiful garden ). Thanks for the recommendation of Kandersteg and Oeschinensee, Maria.
Margarida and Otilia : Hard-working ladies who always left our room in a spotless condition.
Ursula : Hard work in the breakfast room and a stunning smile for everyone.

Purpose of stay was short stopover on a roadtrip.

Had a room with a small balcony that had stunning views down the valley (you could see the mountains through the doors while lying down on the bed).

The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, the rooms simple but clean and comfortable. Overall, great value for money and will definitely be staying here again when I return next year.

After reading reviews here at TripAdvisor, we decided to stay in Lauterbrunnen at the Hotel Staubbach. We had a "Double room Balcony South" room for CHF140/night the first weekend of May. It was wonderful! Great owners, helpful staff, and very clean. All the good things you read in other reviews is true.

Tips:
* Get a balcony room! Don't be tempted to save a few bucks and miss this opportunity. It was great to sit out on the balcony with a book, although I was not doing much reading because it is hard to look away from the view.

* Not only do you have to pay for internet access, the computers are located downstairs in the TV room area. They are coin-operated, so you must have cash. Also, the actual computers are locked up behind wood boxes, so there is no way to connect your USB drive or memory card to upload digital pictures or attach them to emails. Pretty much all you can do is access web-based email and surf the web. This is true of all public computers all over Lauterbrunnen, not just this hotel.

* If you bring your own laptop, there is no wireless internet access at the hotel or anywhere in town that we could find - and we asked around.

* Reserve early and be specific about the room type you want. If a large room is important, be specific, they will try to accommodate you.

* Dinner is not served at the Hotel Staubbach. The first night I wanted fondue, a local specialty. The hotel owner recommended that fondue is priced about the same at all the restaurants in town, so we could choose a very nice restaurant (well, very nice by Lauterbrunnen standards). We ended up at the Hotel Silberhorn for dinner, and yes, it was good. The second night he recommended Hotel Oberalp. Again, a very good dinner, probably the best yet. We had the ribeye and mushroom tortellini. Yum.

* Trummelbach Falls is a 45-minute walk from the hotel along a scenic, paved path/road. Very little traffic on the walk, so it is safe for the family. We brought our cameras and stopped frequently to take pictures and observe all the cows, goats, sheep, flowers, and helicopters dropping off base jumpers (lots of parachutes!), so our walk was actually 2 hours. Fantastic, easy walk for everyone.
