“Lovely place to stay to explore the Swiss Alps”
Reviewed 15 August 2010

We stayed at this hotel on nights 5,6 and 7 of our 8 night stay in Switzerland. Nights 1-4 and night 8 was spent in Zurich. So we were well used to the exhorbitant prices in Switzerland once we hit Lauterbrunnen. This was a great place to use as a base for local exploration. Our daughter was hang gliding in Interlaken and we were traveling up the Eiger and Shilthorn. The hotel had loads of charm, was clean and the staff spoke perfect English and was incredibly friendly. It was located in the other end of town from the train station, but the town is tiny and the walk was short.

The first 2 nights were in room 22 which had a great view of the falls and was large enough and comfortable. When we extended to a third night we had to move to room 14. I would avoid this room. It was smaller, had a balcony on the front of the hotel but also had not electrical accounts whatsoever in the room - so no hair dryer or a place to plug one in. Other rooms could have the same problem. You might want to inquire. The shower was very cramped and somewhat non-functional as the shower head was very loose and had to be attended to the whole time in the shower or you would spray the entire bathroom (which I did). Our daughter had room 18 which was the best of the three rooms we had - balcony looking at the falls and a complete renovated bathroom with shower/tub combination.

The breakfast was very good and had everything you could ask for. The internet was free and while the wireless was not always functioning in the rooms, it was always functioning in the common room.

Our rooms were 160 chf for room 22 and room 18 and 150 chf for room 14. (spend the extra 10) We thought this was quite economical when you factored in the included breakfast.

If we go again - we would definitely stay here.

In spite of unseasonably cold and wet weather, we truly enjoyed our stay in Lauterbrunnen. The Hotel Staubbach was everything I had read about on this website. Rooms are comfortably basic, breakfast is fabulous (red eggs?), hotel staff is very friendly, and the location is excellent. We enjoyed the conveniences of restaurants and a grocery store in the town. The train station and gondola are within walking distance, and the town bus is handy for further sites. We loved the serenity and beauty of the valley without much commerical intrusion. We also had a good time watching the World Cup in the common room downstairs with other guests. We had a mere two days in Lauterbrunnen, but would have welcomed more days to explore neighboring valleys, Interlacken......and better views of the mountains without clouds and rain. :)

Location - A bit of a walk from the train station but the rooms with the balcony offer a decent view of the waterfall. Relatively quiet neighborhood.
Breakfast - Good spread. Quite filling.
Rooms - On the smaller side and could do with some refurbishment.
Price - Good place to stay but on the whole maybe just a bit too pricey for what is offered.

Hotel Staubbach is an excellent place to stay,,, not modern but with much charm, wood floors, creaking stairs, great breakfast, great helpful staff, free parking close to all, beautiful views. Worlds best and fastest elevator. Would be better if the bar was open, but the Horner bar is just a stone throw away.

Lauterbrunnen valley was great for the outdoor lover. The hotel was a perfect location for the start of day trips around the area. The view from our room was spectacular. We ended every day with a drink on our deck looking out at the falls. The room wasn't the most modern, but it was clean, comfortable and spacious (the kids had an adjoining room with bunk beds). The staff were great and more than willing to answer any questions we had of the area, suitable family hikes and Switzerland in general. The breakfast was fresh and plentiful. Highly recommended for a quiet family get-away.

We had a great room at the Hotel Staubbach! It had a great balcony that faced the Staubbach Falls with a breathtaking view. As in other reviews, the clock tower was also just outside our room that seemed to go off every 15 minutes. It took a break in the evenings and we really were not bothered by it. There was quite a bit of noise from traffic and noise from a bar that’s just down the street. The hotel is on the main street and cars went by constantly during the daytime. There was also some street work being done, so there was constant jackhammer noise. Luckily, we spent most of our days out of the hotel, so it didn’t really bother us. There were cows in the pasture right next to the hotel, so we heard the cow bells all the time. If you have a problem with noise, this is not the place for you. Next time, we might consider staying in Wengen or Murren which were much quieter villages. The hotel though, is situated towards the end of town and quite convenient with only a 5 minute walk to the train station. It was a great location for a base of all the places to go in the Berner Oberland area. The hotel offered free WLAN and also had a computer in their sitting room. The connection was very slow. The breakfast was very good with typical cheese, meat, bread and cereals. They also had hard boiled eggs. The staff was extremely helpful and accommodating. At breakfast, the staff made a point of approaching our table every day and asking what our plans were and asking if we needed any suggestions or help. We would stay here again.

I have stayed in Hotel Staubbach in Jul 10. The hotel is nice and clean. But I was so disappointed about the rate that we booked through hotels.com. I have booked the hotel for 2 nights through hotels.com. The website charged me CHF168 per nite. While I visited the hotel, I found that the hotel room is only CHF140 per nite. I was so disappointed with the rate that hotels.com offered to me and the website said they have price guarantee. I have asked the hotel why hotels.com charged me a higher rate than book directly with you. They said it's because of the agency fee the website charged me. They asked me to book through global hotel index next time with no agency fee. This made me so frustrated and I have asked for refund from hotels.com. The website said they will reply any enquiry within 3 days and I haven't got any reply from them in 2 weeks. I will NEVER TRUST HOTELS.COM AND I WILL NEVER USE HOTELS.COM AGAIN.
