“Obliging Ursula”
Reviewed 2 November 2013

It was a great stay and we're lucky to have met Ursula, the owner of the hotel, who was helpful in every way. She patiently provided us with detailed tips for day trips out and about Lauterbrunnen, and they were all great advice.

The hotel was a comfortable distance from the rail station, and this was vital for travellers like us who hop around a few countries in a single trip bearing lots of luggage. The view from our balcony was good, but the view everywhere in Lauterbrunnen's good anyhow. There isn't a lift, but that's not an issue for us (lugging the luggage up the stairs was good exercise, kind of.)

If there is a down side to Oberland, it's the bed and pillow. The bed was too bouncy for us and the pillows were rather flat. Gotta be careful not to shift too much, or you'll awaken your partner!

If you are someone who needs to stay connected to the Internet 24-7, you probably won't want to be in a room at the corner at the far end like we were. But really, in Lauterbrunnen, I think the Internet's the last thing you ought to connect to if you haven't already connected with nature!

Breakfast was good, and I appreciate the occasional hot chocolate early in the morning. The eggs heated on hot sand were also tasty! The breakfast staff was also always eager to serve.

By the way, the rosti at the restaurant was great!

Room Tip: Book early for a view of the falls. And there is hardly any wireless internet access if you'll i...

We stayed a rooom for 2 adults and 2 children on the back side viewed of the Staubbach falls . The room was large enough, tidy, clean and has wooden stuff. Breakfast was fine (egg, chese, croissant, delicious bread, jams, fruits, milk, tea, hot chocolate, coffee, ). free wi-fi.
The owner was nice. I heard the restaurant was good in that area. But this was the misfortune for me that it was closed just right that evening :(
The valley is really amazing and calm: waterfalls, campings, paragliding.... and the places Jungfraujoch, İnterlaken, Trummelbach Falls, Schilthorn.... The cable is worth to go Schiltorn by using four stage: 1-Mürren, 2-Allmendhubel, 3-Birg and 4-Schilthorn (2970 m).

Room Tip: The back side has waterfalls view.

Loved the owners of Hotel Oberland. They made sure we felt welcome, with lots of suggestions. The hotel served a wonderful breakfast with fresh fruit and breads. They put large pots of coffee and large pitchers on each table, so you could mix your own latte. Our room was in the Annex and it was huge with a balcony out front.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the Annex. We were on the third floor, so it was quiet.

We enjoyed our stay here considerably. Although my wife and I speak at least reasonable tourist German, and one can find good English everywhere in Switzerland (especially in a tourist Mecca like this), we still enjoyed the UK and Australia born staff, not only very friendly, but also knowledgeable of the area from long-term experience, and very helpful. The location is very convenient to the Jungfraujoch train (via Wengen), to the cable car up to hike to Murren, etc. We drove here, and there is a little parking lot right across the hotel (free!), but it's a small village and the train and buses are quite convenient.

The rooms were good, though not fancy. We had two adults and three older children, and both rooms, on the back side of the hotel, had views of the Staubbach falls. There is no elevator, so there is a bit of exercise getting up to the higher floors. Breakfast (included) was fine, but not exceptional. The restaurant in front was very nice, a great terrace overlooking the main street. We stayed three nights, and ate at the restaurant every night, which I wouldn't normally do, but there isn't that much choice in the little town, and the restaurant was good.

We had a great stay at Hotel Oberland. The thing that made this place great was how friendly everyone was. The staff will talk to you each day to see what your plans are, make suggestions, let you know what they expect the weather to do as a lot of activities around Lauterbrunnen are weather dependent.

Our room was simple and cosy. I could open the doors to our little balcony and watch a waterfall with snow capped mountains in the background from bed. As other people have said, you can here other guests moving about but I think this is to be expected when you are staying in a beautiful traditional old wooden building. There is not much the owners could do about this.

Stay here if you want simple rooms with great views and very friendly staff.

The hotel is centrally located (however, everything is centrally located as it is a very small town) on the only street in town. The view from the balcony was great, and I liked how they set up the balcony - it felt private, I could not see my neighbors, and had an unobstructed view of the valley and mountains. It also had a small table and chairs. The room itself was decent size and had all necessities. However what totally drove me crazy was soundproofing - or lack of it. The hotel is old and built of wood. This means you can hear everything other guests are doing - using the bathroom, walking, talking.. Glad there were no honeymooners in the room above, lol. Two night out of three I was staying there I could not sleep well at all because I was woken up by people jumping and stomping, at 5am, obviously packing to leave the hotel or go out. Also I could here everything from a big patio - restaurant was right below, and some people stayed out late. My suggestion - either pick a place made of concrete, or stay on the top floor (mind there is no elevator). The hotel felt old, cheap, and overpriced.
Breakfast was reasonably good, however dinner was bland. You will find better and cheaper food at other places - wonderful cafe style meals at Airtime Action, value and tasty meals at Steinbock, or great healthy food at Silberhorn.

Room Tip: Only stay here if you can get a top floor room with a balcony
