Akaroa House Bed & Breakfast
Reviewed 5 December 2012

Akaroa House can only be described as magical! Beautifully and comfortably appointed bedrooms, bathrooms and outdoor/indoor living spaces. Our hostess, Alison, was brilliant! Delicious meals/afternoon teas and knowledgeable about all things related to the area. She even went out of her way to assist with forgotten luggage.

Akaroa House was our staring point for a four day walk on Banks Track. Our group consisted of 5 girlfriends about to set out on a trek of a lifetime. Nothing was too much trouble, from the afternoon tea on arrival, lovely dinner, great company, beautiful decor and cosy lounge. The stunning views over the town of Akaroa and the harbour and the recommendations for the cafes, shops and fish monger were unforgettable. There is nothing like local knowledge to aid in enjoying a visit to a delightful part of the world.
I would recommend Akaroa House as a must for any friends or family visiting Banks Peninsula. Alison is a charming hostess and clearly enjoys meeting and looking after her guests. The house is beatifully decorated - all the furnishings, linen, towels are gorgeous and every attention to detail is meticulous.

Hello Lorrae - it was lovely to meet you all, and well done on your tramp of the Banks Peninsula Track in all weathers!. It worked out well that I was in residence and could offer your group DB&B. Akaroa House often offered as a self-catering house. All the very best and hope to hear from you again. Kind Regards - Alison : )

Can highly recommend this accommodation if you're heading to Akaroa - any time of year. We visited over a cold winter weekend and were very warm and comfortable in the welcoming home with 7 heat pumps and a fabulous wood burner.

Alison and her team have done a superb job of presenting the home with numerous added extras. We all attended the Akaroa Cooking School and can recommend that as part of a 'girls getaway!'

Girls weekends do seem to love their time at Akaroa House. It is such fun being all together in the one large house - the heatpumps and fire have proved their worth for winter guests : )
thanks Janet for taking the time to review and hope you are enjoying those Cooking school tips : )

8 of us headed to Akaroa for a girls weekend and chose Akaroa House for our accommodation. So glad we did. From the ease of booking with Alison, all arrival details explained etc then arriving on a cold wet evening in mid Winter to find the place warm and so inviting, it proved to be a perfect choice. We soon had the fires lit, dinner underway and all settled comfortably in the roomy lounge with a wine in hand. Choice of who had which bedroom was incidental as they were all warm and comfy with bathroom handy and plenty of them.
All in all a great 3 night stay in a great place.

I stayed overnight at Akaroa House in February with a friend from Belgium. This really is a beautiful home with oustanding furnishings, lovely garden and wonderful view.
We had intended to stay in Christchurch but luckily for us most places were full so we made the trip to Akaroa and what good fortune this was. My Belgian friend absolutely loved Akaroa House and our overnight stay was the best place he had visited and made a great way to finish our South Island trip.

In February our son, wife and 2 year old came home from the Uk and our daughter and her partner and daughter came from Sydney so we chose Akaroa House for a 5 night family holiday, first in 10 years. The house was amazing, very roomy, lovely views, everything there and a lovely kitchen that we shared lovely meals around the big table. The weather wasn't good the first few days but there was still plenty of space for everyone to do there own thing. Would definitely recommend this property as a home away from home for any special occassion. Thankyou Alison and Ross for sharing this beautiful historic building with us. Cheers. Glen and Rob Dickson, Greg Dickson, Alice Gregory, Indi Gregory-Dickson and Dee Dickson, and Grant Luke and Becci Luke.

Room Tip: They are all lovely, just different views.

As Christchurch residents, we have been to Akaroa many times over the years and stayed in many different places. Last time we did a lovely B+B but with the extended family in tow, we opted for something a bit bigger and more sumptuous.

Akaroa House is situated up the hill at the end of the village. It has wonderful views, looking down over the village and harbour. Originally the Mayor's home back in the 1800s, it has been restored and added to in the last decade by the current owners. With 5 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms, the house caters well to larger groups. There are 3 bedrooms upstairs (1 double with ensuite and walk in wardrobe). The other 2 share a bathroom. Downstairs is the master bedroom with ensuite and lovely bath tub and a small room with 2 single beds and a separate bathroom.

The kitchen is very well equipped and have basic ingredients if you want to cook. If not, Akaroa has many fine restaurants. There is a good supermarket in the village (4 Square) if you need provision, as well as a local butcher and fresh fish right off the wharf most days.

The house feels roomy and with huge outdoor decking, there is no shortage of places to curl up. There is a small, sloping garden if you fancy lying out on the grass. We spent a lot of time just sitting on the decks and staring at the view. If you feel the need to move, the village is a simple 5 mins walk.

It's not cheap to stay at but it's probably the best house to stay in if you want some space and great views. With a large family or group of friends, it's actually good value. We had a marvelous time here and can't really think of any drawbacks. Alison or her local helpers are always available to help if needed.

Very highly recommended as a place to stay in Akaroa.
