“Akaroa's National Park”
Reviewed 21 March 2012

Hinewai is an outstanding example of conservation in action. The manager Hugh Wilson is one of New Zealand's leading conservationists and most knowledgeable field botanists.

“One of our favorite hikes in New Zealand”
Reviewed 11 March 2012

This is a beautifully maintained reserve. We hiked to Long Bay through an amazing labyrinth of native flora. I loved that many of the trees and bushes were marked with their common and scientific names and some had explanations of growth habits and challenges.

“Bush Walk”
Reviewed 21 February 2012

I spent over 40 years on a farm in this area, and have walked most of this area well before it became the Hinewai Reserve.Mainly shooting rabbits and blackbirds.
Want a great bush walk, then enjoy this. Ankle boots / shoes be good though.

“Beautiful walks”
Reviewed 30 January 2012

This is a walkers paradise. The reserve can be accessed fro two car-parks, an upper car-park and a lower car-park. As with most of Akaroa, the walks are often quite steep in places, so take a water bottle. There are several nice walks to waterfalls etc that take between one to 3 hours. A nice easy walk is accessed from the lower car-park. From here there is an easy 20 minute walk down to the bay at the bottom of the reserve. It is a nice, peaceful bay, take your swimming togs if it is a hot day, you will probably have the beach to yourself. If you like beautiful native bush, native birds, waterfalls etc, this is the place for you.

“Bring back the Bush”
Reviewed 15 January 2012

This is an amazing example of native bush regeneration. It's a huge reserve offering some wonderful walks, some quite testing. You could spend a day here just wandering around. There is even a hut you can stay at, if you arrange it in advance (the visitors information centre).

It's a short ride from Akaroa and is an absolute must if you like the bush, hiking or just want to get out a stretch your legs. You can even walk down to the beach for a swim, so bring your togs!
