“Charming”
Reviewed 9 June 2010

This is a beautiful B&B run by very charming people. We didn't have anywhere booked for Akaroa as we didn't know if we could fit it into our itenary on our tour of the South Island. We arrived in the evening and tried to find a few B&B's that were open, and arrived at Wilderness House.

Its a fantastic charming old house and you feel like you're entering something historic on arrival. We had a choice of bedroom, all which were gorgeous and well presented. Liz was very good arranging a meal for us nearby and then we shared a lovely bottle of wine with Jim and Liz when we got back from the meal.

Breakfast was lovely and well presented again.

We had hoped to go on the boat trip to swim with the dolphins, but this was booked out, so good idea to book ahead. The drive from Christchurch to Akaroa is fantastic, so make sure you're doing it in plenty daylight.

Would recommend Wilderness House to anyone travelling around NZ. It was the first B&B we stayed in during our 2 week tour of the South Island and it was definately a worth while treat.

We recently experienced the joy of staying at Wilderness House in Akaroa and felt we had gone to the other side of the world. This beautifully decorated house exudes English country charm and has a very warm and welcoming feel about it. The host and hostess couldn't have made our stay more pleasant. Our room was comfortable and well appointed with homely detail straight from the pages of English House and Garden! We were treated to a glass of wine from their own vineyard in the evening and enjoyed an excellent breakfast, that included Akaroa salmon, in the morning.

We spent two nights here at the end of our holiday. This is a house like you dream of having for yourself and you could have a break here without going out the front gate. The house is packed with a huge collection of books and objects, the rooms are beautifully decorated and comfortable, all different, the garden is lovely and just begs to be sat in with a book or a glass of wine or both. In summer breakfast is taken in the garden and in cooler weather in a beautifully decorated dining room, open fire and all. The owners Jim and Liz and George the cat made us feel warmly welcomed and instantly at home. Jim is full of local knowledge and eager to share it so that you can do as much or as little as you want. We had a special anniversary while we were there and Jim's advice of restaurant was greatly appreciated and perfect. This is my second stay here and if I am a very good girl with any luck it won't be my last.

We have stayed with Jim and Liz in their fantastic B&B four times now and it feels like coming home each time. Akaroa would have to be our favourite place in NZ and Wilderrness House our favourite B&B! It is in the heart of the village but up a side street and so lovely and quiet, as the town gets very busy in the tourist season. We have never heard bird song like it in the wonderful big garden and the trees are spectacular. The house is so comfortable and actually feels like an English country house. The rooms are absolutely beautiful, we have stayed in all four and can't pick a favourite! The beds and furnishings just perfect. The free wi fi is a bonus and also the laptop that is available for guest use.
Breakfasts are amazing and we have seen them collecting produce from the garden minutes before it is prepared into something delicous.. We particularly love the evening happy hour mixing with the other guests and enjoy sampling their own estate wine and tasty hors douvres.
Jim is great with his information on local walks, drives and tourist activities, and freely gives his time for all of the guests so that they can enjoy the attractions of the area as much as possible during their stay.

We couldn't recommend Wilderness House highly enough and will definietly be back in the very near future, yet again!

Jim and Liz are the ultimate hosts. They work hard to ensure that their guests have a wonderful stay in their beautiful home. Drinks and canapes at 6:30pm are not mandatory, but we recommend that you attend for a lively and entertaining start to your evenings. Breakfasts are delicious and provide a similarly entertaining start to the day. Jim has excellent local knowledge which helped to make the most of our 3-day stay. Wilderness House is within easy walking distance of the centre of Akaroa where there are good restaurants and plenty of water-based activities.

A beautiful spot. We were only here for one night though would have loved to stay longer. Everything was thought of by our hosts and I cant speak highly enough of them or their lovely property. Easily able to accommodate our vegetarian dietry requirements as well. Deninitely will return next time we are back in Akaroa!

Wilderness House was the final destination of our New Zealand vacation and what a wonderful spot it was! Our gracious hosts not only made us feel at home, but ensured that we found all the beautiful walks and drives from this picturesque corner of the world. We enjoyed the superb breakfasts, the exchange of travel stories, the history of the area, the decor of the house and meeting other guests while sharing a glass or two of wine from Jim's own vineyard. Our stay at Wilderness House provided the perfect end to our vacation!
