Spent our first 2 nights in New Zealand at the Akaroa Criterion. What a fantastic start to a fantastic holiday. Great Motel - huge room with a view, beautifully clean (and I am very fussy). Could not have asked for more. We loved the location even though not right in the middle of town. Only a short walk to everywhere. Dave made us feel very welcome.

We arrived in Akaroa with our AA Motel Guide after arriving by air in Christchurch.....stayed one night at the Criterion. Hostess lovely, so too her beautiful cat and dog......room on first floor large and very comfortable with water view and balcony. Spoilt us for later motel rooms which could not match size and reasonable pricing. Supermarket just around the corner for ease of quick meal, so too restaurants.
Unfortunately our schedule only allowed one night, but the township of Akaroa was quite special and our visit was complimented by great accommodation.

My husband and I were given an AA Guide when we rented our car at Christchurch Airport. It was from this guide that I noticed the Criterion Motel in Akaroa as a definite accommodation possibility, on our NZ road trip. We were not disappointed, and we were given a very large, clean, fully appointed and comfortable room on the second storey of the motel, with a balcony overlooking the magnificent view of Akaroa Bay. Undercover parking is available below the hotel rooms. A large shop on the main road, directly behind the motel is more than adequate to provide provisions for breakfast in your hotel room. A toaster and kettle, crockery and cutlery are provided in your room, along with fresh milk. I must say it does make a difference if you have good weather, and we were mostly blessed with that during our driving holiday around the South Island. After settling in to our hotel room, we took a walk around town and booked dinner at the French influenced Ma Maison, an attractive restaurant close by to the motel. We weren't disapponted with the delicious salmon dinner we enjoyed for our meal later that night, apparently caught that day in the bay. We were there on a busy mid week night, when they were fully booked, and still our meals arrived without too much of a wait, and with excellent service. What drew me to Ma Maison was that during our afternoon walk we observed people in the late afternoon sunshine, enjoying a drink on some of the outside tables. We were then drawn to the adjacent jetty and the adorable cupola roofed shelter at its end. Could there be a more romantic spot in the entire historic French influenced village? We returned to the Criterion and sat on the balcony and relaxed, enjoying the magnificent sunset. Had we had more time we would have taken one of the boat trips the following morning to see the whales and sealife. Early the next morning we took a walk and found the historic wooden lighthouse, On our return, we walked to end of the main wharf where we visited a shop to view the famous blue pearls, grown exclusively from abalone shells, native to the area. The staff at the hotel were friendly and kind. If there was one place in New Zealand that we should have stayed longer, it should have been the Criterion motel at Akaroa. However, it is definitely a destination I will visit again.

Close to shops and ample parking. Room was quite big. Beds sag a bit. Limited satellite TV channels. Elderly couple run it and don't tolerate noise. No oven in rooms. Hot plate on request. Cleaners are great. No pool or fitness centre.

Room Tip: Level 3 has great views.

We stayed in the Penthouse Suite as this was the only room available with a spa bath at short notice. The view from our room was amazing looking out over the wee wharf and everything was lovely and clean. Motel had everything we needed, including a full kitchen and the host was very friendly and helpful. The location is very good, just off the main street and we stayed on a Saturday night but wasn't bothered by any noise. Would definitely stay again but probably look at one of the other rooms as $220 was just a bit high, but very nice for a one off treat.

Stayed here before flying out of Christchurch. Had penthouse apartment which enjoyed lovely views but otherwise was just a large apartment. On saying that it was very comfortable and a lovely place to end our holidays. Location was perfect. Easy walking distance to shops/restaurants. Really enjoyed the laid back feel of Akaroa.

We stayed here after backpacking around NZ and before flying from Christchurch to Sydney. We needed to 'escape' the backpackers and have a little bit of comfort and peace at the end of a 6 week backpack around the North and South islands.
The Criterion was great, large room on the first floor with a balcony looking out towards the harbour, comfortable bed, facilities to cook basic food (owner supplied an electric frying pan ) excellent bathroom. Very clean and worth the money. Wifi available as well.
We walked up in the hills behind the town and the view was stunning.
There's plenty of eating places in Akaroa and the town itself is a bit 'twee' with the French influence.
We would stay here again when we return to Akaroa.

Room Tip: The rooms on the first floor have the best views
