we had been advised not to leave Akaroa without having the fish and chips from here. They were right. Fresh lightly battered fish and crispy chips cooked to perfection. Nothing pre-cooked. All served in paper the way fish & chips should eaten. Amazing the number of different nationalities eating here when we were here. Word has gotten around. Loved it.

Having been out of the UK for nearly 6 months this little taste of home was a lovely surprise. Having ordered a traditional fish and chips the wait wasn't too long despite being packed to the rafters. The fish batter was crisp and flavorful while the fish was delicious. The chips were spot on too, and they didn't skimp on the portion size either, I have a healthy (glutinous!) appetite and was stuffed by the time I finished. The only negative would be the price which was a little on the high side to other similar restaurants I've visited in New Zealand. Definitely worth a visit.

Some places get a reputation that just spreads, though few are in the takeaway food business. There are two standouts in the specialty field of "fish and chips" - one is at Mongonui in the Bay of Islands and the other is this place in Akaroa.

Their battered cod is fantastic. The batter is light, golden and ultra-crunchy but the fish retains its moisture and firmness. You just know that it is as fresh as they can get it. Their chips are clean-tasting and cooked to the just right balance of crunch on the outside and fluffy inside. There is not the slightest hint of the stale oil that afflicts many takeaway joints.

The place is open most hours and it is amazing to see the breakfast crowd it attracts!

You can eat in the restaurant or on trestles outside, or do as we did and take that piping hot packet of goodies back home to eat it out of the paper, with a chilled sauvignon blanc, looking out over Akaroa Harbour.

The staple Kiwi takeaway doesn't get much better than this.

We were certainly spoilt with fresh Hoki and big potato chips. We sat on the bench on the sea front which is across the road from the shop. The seagulls came, performed, danced and squealed. We found one had to be quick to eat the chips or they were taken out of your hand and blow me down, one cheaky bird even ventured to the bundle of fish and chips on the seat and went off with half my fish!!!! Such is the joy of sharing with nature. We loved it.
