We've had some brilliant welcomes in New Zealand, but this was the first time that we've been welcomed as the very first guests to a new B&B. Banks House is the sister property to Beaufort House, on the other side of Akaroa bay, and is intended to offer a similar sort of bijou bed-and-breakfast experience but on a slightly smaller scale. We booked on the Friday afternoon before the long Labour Weekend, having not realised (as visitors to the country) that space would be at a premium. Banks House really stretched our budget but it had the distinct advantage of having space *and* not requiring booking for a minimum of two days, and it was worth every cent. We were given an upgrade on our room (there's four, two each at two price points) as we were the only guests and to minimise any disturbance from some work that was still being completed on one room. The Garden Room was very appealing - fresh and bright, and nestled into the beautiful, blooming garden. The room was spotless, the bed immensely comfortable, and the space incredibly warm and quiet on a very blustery night. The continental breakfast was fantastic: warm fresh bread and croissants, a superb fruit platter and a selection of cereals and yoghurt including - a highlight - fruity, creamy bircher muesli. The friendliness and helpfulness of the hosts, and their enthusiasm for the new venture was the icing on the cake. Thoroughly recommended!
