“Miss my stay here a lot”

Best hostel I've stayed before! Spent there two nights and everything went on perfectly from first moment I was checked in til I left. The female dorm was just so comfy with shower inside. Kitchen is small but very well equipped and can get very busy during dinner time, which someone might not like, but I do since it creates good atmosphere. Especially love the fire place and how traveler chilled out together around this area. Lots of fun and games to play at night like jenga or uno or canian... (well, someone that prefers quietness and being on your own might find this place not suitable for you, but for those who love socializing with other travellers, it is definitely what you're looking for). Lovely back garden and above all, being the guest staying here, you get $10 discount for the FOX II sailing cruise, which is far better than the dolphin swimming tour by black cat cruise, though it's cheaper (65 for non-guest and 55 for guest).

We had a twin room. It was lovely and clean, but was decorated like a little girls bedroom, which was a bit weird.

Kitchens were a mess. Nobody seemed to clear up after themselves. Everything was dirty. Not much room in fridges. and not much worktop space.

garden has so much potential, it just needs a bit of tidying up.

the rest of the place is nice and clean though.

the dog is fab, a real gentle giant.

right in the middle of town, which is a lovely place.

we swam with hectors dolphins, it was great. we did it with black cat cruises. The actual part with the dolphins was great, but the company is unorganised and it took so long to get everyone ready. There is another company that are cheaper and just go on one trip early morning. I think they would be better if you have your own transport to get to their start point. They don't take as many people so it would be a lot more pleasant. We found out about these after we'd booked the other one though!

We stayed for two nights in a double ensuite room which had a double and a single bed. The bed was comfortable and the room quiet as it’s away from the main seating areas. There are two kitchens that can get busy with a nice patio garden to eat in.

There’s free tea, coffee and WiFi. Its on the main street (you can’t miss it its bright pink!) but there’s no noise from the road. Its our second visit and was as comfortable and pleasant as our first.

This cute (pink!) hostel with a fabulous garden is..

centrally located
small and cosy
lots of room options (including dorms, doubles, twins and a triple... think there might be a family room option as well)
cash only
Owners have a sailboat (yay!) to take people out on trips during the day, not sure about current pricing but guests get discount!
Plus, it might be the only hostel in New Zealand with free wifi and filter coffee.

Akaroa itself is a lovely little village as well, definitely worth spending more than one night if you can.

Room Tip: Queen ensuite! Dorms are good, too.

Great people, atmosphere, and town. Akaroa is an incredible little town with a ton of character and even better scenery. We ended up staying in Chez La Mer for 3 nights in a cozy dorm. Met a ton of awesome people and had a lot of amazing food in town. Definitely add this town to your NZ itinerary, you won't regret it.
