The stay here was alright however the owners really were not welcoming and the place had a very bad vibe going around it. Also they charge a hefty amount and then make you pay for every single extra for example renting dvds to using the spa pool.

Clean, new, friendly staff - the best location!

Travelling through NZ with friends - this was rated by the groupos as the best location of the tour.

I am not sure why this is not the no 1 in Akaroa - but from our experience - it was excellent - thank you to Chris!

Driftwood Motel is now known as the Akaroa Waterfront Motels.
From the beginning, with the view of the carpark and the tiny unit we were put in, we were not impressed. It went downhill from there, we were woken in the early hours of the morning by the people in the room above us. Through the paper thin ceilings we could hear everything- from a teaspoon stirring a cup to a person opening a drawer.

Exhausted from lack of sleep I went to see the owner about a late check out. The atrocious customer service was unlike anything I have encountered before in New Zealand. I was told that I would have to pay for the late check out. This was followed by a long rant where the owner denied there was a problem at all. At one stage he even had the said "well what do you expect when you are crammed in like sardines", referring to how small the rooms are and how close together they are.

We stayed here for 3 nights whilst on our 2nd tour of the South Island.
Although there is a new manager and the prizes have gone up since 2005 we enjoyed are stay in beautiful Akaroa. We love the scenery, the warm weather and the evenings in this French cultured town.
The room was still great with a lovely view over the bay and beyond. This is an ideal motel from where to see the rest of the Banks peninsula and the beaches "over" the rim road.
We had the opportunity to visit one of NZ greatest water painters at French Farm too.
A great stay.

I cannot agree with some of the previous reviewers about this accommodation. We moved here after not being very happy in the motel we had booked from home. We were given a 1 bedroom apartment directly on the waterfront, with superb views. All the apartments, and I believe the motel (which is in a separate building) have been totally renovated. We had a kitchen with 2 hotplates and a new microwave. It was very well equiped with crockery, cutlery and saucepans. The decor was very, very tasteful. It was lovely to sit outside on the porch, and look across the lawn at the panoramic view of sea and mountains. As the weather was a little cold in the evening, we also appreciated the heating in both the lounge room and the bedroom, and the bed was extremely comfortable. All in all, we would not fault this apartment, and we would certainly stay there again if we ever return, and for longer. It was so serene and quiet. Also, the ower was very, very helpful and could not have been nicer. So do not be put off by some of the other reviews!! Expect to pay more for accommodation in Akaroa, but this was cheaper than most other motels there.
