“Very relaxing stay at Kokopu state”
Reviewed 27 November 2013

There is an atmosphere of tranquility all over the place. We stayed in the B&B option - in the suit, and it worked perfectly for us since what we wanted was having everything done. The breakfast was amazing. Wendy and Mark were really friendly, welcoming us with some wine and nibbles and we also had the opportunity to have really interesting conversations with them. Totally recommended!

So i'll set the scene for you - imagine your own little country cottage, complete with an open fire place, adjoining a kitchen from yesteryear. Then attach another small room with a daybed stepping down into a beautiful garden with chairs where you can sit and look over your own small section of country paradise. Grab your drinks or your books or both - and listen to the birds as you look downwards at the gardens falling away into your own perfect little stream.

Take a deal breath and relax. Once you've unwound maybe you would like a private outdoor bath heated underneath by a log fire? We did - it was totally unique and so much fun! Make sure you bring your fire making skills...

Then, when it gets a bit cooler, go and cosy up to the lit open fire just the two of you and enjoy some wine, before retiring to a comfortable bed.

5 stars, well done!

Room Tip: If you like privacy then choose the kokopu cottage.

Stepping into Kokopu Cottage is like stepping back in time. Delightful old world charm, complete with open fire (such a rare treat these days), slouchy couches & armchairs & creaky floorboards. Trinkets from yesteryear adorn the living & dining areas but you still have the basic modern conveniences required in the kitchen. The bathroom/laundry area is more than adequate & the baby iron lined shower a nice touch in keeping with the rustic effect. The garden; stream below; orchard across the footbridge and abundance of native bird-life are simply enchanting. Sadly as we contemplated using the outdoor bath, the heavens opened, so we gave that a miss, but can well imagine how enjoyable to sit & soak amid the lush foliage would be. Tucked up the valley away from the village, the complete darkness at night, with no street light competition, makes for exceptional star watching plus that added feel of complete isolation. If you're seeking 'the simple life', without TV & computer access, and just want to kick back & relax, then this Cottage is the place! For me, staying at Kokopu Cottage took me back in time to my early childhood, living in an old a farmhouse in Le Bons Bay ...... a pleasurable time.

We loved the Gatekeepers Cottage, and the way Wendy and Mark have decorated and fitted it out. Modern, but with rustic touches, and lots of wood - like the exposed beams and rough sawn wooden ceiling. Whilst the cottage is actually an upstairs studio loft (with small lounge/reception area downstairs), it had everything we could possibly want for a secluded romantic weekend for two. Just perfect!

Being 1.5 kms out of the Akaroa township, it had that real country farm feel, with open paddocks, lots of native bush and the bird life was abundant. It was a real pleasure to wake to the dawn chorus of the many native birds. The King size bed was super comfy too....those cotton sheets were so soft and luxurious!!

Wendy and Mark were the perfect hosts....very friendly and welcoming, yet not intrusive - so you hardly know that the "cottage" is attached to the main house. We will definitely be back to stay again when we next need to escape to paradise!

Room Tip: If you need a bit more room, or don't wish to be attached to the main house, choose the Kokopu C...

There could not have been a better start to our holiday in New Zealand then to stay the first 3 nights in the Gatekeeper’s Cottage. It was simply perfect. Thanks so much to our hosts Wendy and Mark for everything. They were so kind to us and we loved talking to them. We liked the silence of nature, the stars at night, waking up with the sunlight, walking over the hills around the house, sitting in the yard on a sunny day and enjoying the peaceful area. The two rooms are spacious (one downstairs, one upstairs) with many nice details. The bed was very comfortable. We used the kitchenette only for the breakfast. It is only a short drive to Akaroa. We recommend Vangionis Trattoria and Bar, the restaurant of the son. The pizza is really special there. We highly recommend this accommodation and the restaurant too.

We stayed two nights with Mark and Wendy in their Gatekeeper's Cottage in early March 2013. The owners raise sheep, bottle their own red and white wine (excellent by the way and for sale on occasion,) have a spring that supplies their water, and grow vegetables for their own use and the family's restaurant in town. The cottage was very charming, done in french antique with a number of interesting pieces. Wendy and Mark were grilling venison from a hunt, and shared a taste of their wine. We couldn't have asked for better hosts and a more charming place.
