“Absolutely fantastic!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 April 2013

Wonderful views of the water from our lounge room and an extremely peaceful setting. Great place
To stay nd unwind. The mAngers were very helpful and friendly and the rooms were spotlessly clean. Our only small gripe is the wifi which didn't work from our room. It meant we had to go outside for intermittent service. A small inconvenience for a wonderful place to stay.

We are so pleased you were able to share our fantastic surroundings here at Waikawa and enjoy it all. We are working on the Wifi and hopefully next time you come and stay we will have it sorted.

Nice view. Clean and well equipped kitchen. The furnishing is on the older side but the whole place is clean. The couple that run the place is nice and helpful. Close to central of town. They are very flexible too as I changed my date of stay on the morning we were suppose to arrive due to bad weather. They were happy to change the period of stay for us as they managed to juggle the rooms around.

We stayed over Easter and were very happy to be given their last available room. The room was great! Nice big bed that was very comfortable and am awesome view to wake up to.
The couple that run the motel are very friendly and seem to do all the work themselves. Everything was clean and in good condition.
Would definitely recommend.

Room Tip: We got the family suite at the end of the building, but they all seem very nice and have good privac...

We are North Islanders on a month long tour of the South Island. This small, clean and well presented motel is quietly situated right at the waters edge at Waikawa Bay and all seven units have uninterrupted views of the Sound made even more pleasant by the variety of small vessels moored in the bay. Just 5 mins drive from the centre of the town and if you do not wish to take advantage of the excellent cooking facilities provided in each unit, just a short stroll away is the Waikawa Bay Marina with its excellent restaurant and cafe. The motel reception staff are extremely friendly and helpful.

Motel with great views and nice lounge chairs to enjoy it.
Stayed in March 2013, unit 1 and 2.
Units:
First impression of unit 2, 1-bedroom; a basic motel, but bonus points for the gorgeous view, the nice terrace chairs and table and the ipod speakers. Super bonus points for the lounge chair on the terrace and the detachable/hand held shower! Views and lounge chair were reason to plan a second stay, as i found it a nice place to relax.

The first impression is that of a basic motel, as it suffers from those brightly patterned motel bedspreads of which you never know if they are cleaned after every guest (my guess is not). Why not simply use a duvet with a duvet cover that is washed after every guest? And if needed because of the heat, you can add a sheet to that as well to offer guests a choice.
But overall it looks like the owners/managers really put an effort in, it was really clean, looked freshly painted and had modern and fun looking photos on the wall.
In front of the units there is an open field/garden, and beyond that a great view at the inlet, the boats and the hills of the Marlborough sound.
At night you can see the Milky Way, so for those who come from countries where there is too much light pollution to see it; pull out that lounge chair en gaze at the night sky!
The bed in unit 2 is a king size, but you can feel a hard ridge in the middle, so probably two beds put together.
Unit 1 is a 2-bedroom unit, closest to the office: although prepared for basic motel furniture after unit 2, the lounge furniture made me feel like I was visiting a poverty stricken old granny who is either holding on too long to her furniture, or is getting second hand furniture from other people. This unit definitely needs an update in the lounge and bedrooms.
The kitchen has probably been redone recently, that looked fine, and it is nice that it is slighty separate from the lounge.
The locks of the back window were broken, which is a safety concern, as there is no safe in the unit. Although, the managers are on site all the time.
When I was staying in unit 1, there were a lot of flies in the unit; screens or net curtains would have been nice to keep the bugs out. However, the flies may have been very seasonal, as they weren’t a problem during my stay in unit 2.
But also for unit 1 bonuspoint for the lovely views, the lounge chair on the terrace and the handheld shower. But if you have a choice, pick 2 over 1 or ask to have a look. It is all a matter of taste isn’t it.
Wifi; they use a hotspot: traffic mate; first 200mb free, than 5nzd for every 50mb! Contrary to a lot of people I do not mind paying for internet as it comes at a cost for the owner as well, but per time frame please, not per mb. Terms of usage were also pretty unclear: would I get charged afterwards, or would it just stop? The lady behind the counter couldn’t tell me. If you are a heavy user, 200 mb a day may not be enough, if you are just browsing and mailing, it may be fine.Traffic mate also was not very compatible with my Chrome browser, had to use Explorer. But still I had to enter the code several times, which was annoying.
Besides that, it cannot handle multiple devices, at least that was my impression. So you cannot switch between your phone and computer.
Better option for heavy users is the neighbouring hotspot IAC 5 nzd voor 1 day (for now with a cap of 1 gigabyte, but they are working on a time-packet only). But it only worked in the bedroom of no 2 unit, not in the whole unit. Did not try it in unit 1.
I read in earlier reviews that receiving the motel wifi signal may be an issue in some units, that’s why I indicated beforehand that I would need to use wifi, and was placed in unit 2, and later in unit 1. Had no reception problem in those units.

Instead of just by-passing Picton en route to North Island by ferry, we chose it as a place to relax for three days and were not disappointed. Good reviews sent us to Bay Vista where we were greeted warmly and shown a choice of comfortable and well-equipped rooms, all with separate bedrooms and large attractive living spaces overlooking the pretty bay. It was so peaceful to sit outside, relaxing on our own terrace. We also got a good deal for staying three nights. Travel guides were dismissive of Picton but we found it relaxed and charming, with lots of interest round about- lovely walks along the coast both ways and an excellent chippy!

Room Tip: All rooms have a lovely view of the bay and are not overlooked

We loved our stay here it had the most amazing position on the bay,and there were good restaurants near by.
The rooms were large and very clean, they also had a really good laundry for the use of the client which I found useful.
We only stayed one night but wished we could have spent longer in the area.
The owners were very helpful in recommending trips locally and restaurants.
Would definitely stay here if I was in Picton again
