“Relaxing stay with a great view”
Reviewed 25 July 2010

Randomly stumbled upon this hotel through some online search while we were driving towards Picton. Really glad that we did. The place had awesome view, like from a painting, right outside the window. And since we are in a bay different from the ferry landing, everything is quiet and peaceful.

Homely decorations with clean and tidy amenities. Love the heating blanket during the cold winter nights. Environmentally sound facility where they specifically note that you should only put the towels on the ground if you want them replaced, so they can save precious water on washing. It's these little touches that made the stay more interesting.

Internet access was cheap and blazing fast, but you should stay away from the computer and enjoy the picturesque views. Tons of things to do that are near by, and you can take a 5~10 minute walk to the wharf down the road and have a great dinner there.

Awesomely friendly staff, we were even offered a special deal if we stayed longer (thanks Rachael !! ), but too bad we had to get on the road the next day.

Overall an excellent place for a nice and quiet getaway.

Our stay at the Bay Vista Waterfront couldn't have been better. We were greeted with courtesy and excellent service. The room was inviting and comfortable. The view of the marina and bay was beautiful.

not having a clue what about where we were landing (Picton), i asked the onboard Wellington-to-Picton ferry i-Site worker for suggestions. she pointed out that while Picton itself is perfectly nice and has great places to eat, it's essentially a ferry landing. she suggested that since we were hiring a car, why not consider staying 4km down the road in Waikawa? quiet, peaceful, and right next to the beginning of the Snout Track, a fantastic, easy hike. she personally recommended this place, having stayed there herself for several days. "it's like having your own waterfront park!" she said.
when we got there, we understood what she meant. we stayed in a lower unit (recommended!) and there was nothing between our huge sliding front door and the water except for a lovely big lawn and a perfectly-placed bench. the patio has a nice table & chairs, so breakfasts were peaceful with a view.
the whole place HAS undergone renovation and i can say it's pretty quality. linens are nice & the kitchen is well-stocked with plenty of implements & dishes. the hosts are friendly and always reachable, and if you don't want to make the 5-minute drive into Picton for food, you can easily do the 5-minute walk to two good eateries at the marina.
the waterfront location is totally charming, and really quiet. there was no road noise at all, and you can park right in front of your room. it's a great place to relax and base yourself if you're doing any touring of the gorgeous Marlborough Sounds. best of all, it's friendly to your budget with very reasonable prices for the space & comfort you get.

We had a wonderful few days at Bay Vista, the Motel is in an outstanding location, right on the waterfront......bliss. By the second day, I felt I had been away for a week, I was sooo relaxed. The manageress is delightful, and always aiming to please and a bundle of knowledge about Picton and it's surrounds, and the different tours you can take. The Motel itself is very clean and tidy and a credit to all.

Fabulous situation in Waikawa which is a km or 2 outside Picton. Uninterrupted views to the Marlborough Sounds. Spacious comfortable units, well furnished, staff very good. Clean and good linen. Somehow connected with the awful Lantern Court at Reefton but at least here there was no paying an extra $20 if you wanted a plug for the bath!!
The only negative was that I had to wait and then telephone to get someone to come and get the payment for our units.
Thoroughly recommend this place.

We were a family of 5 adults & found the BV a tad squishy & small but very comfortable. It was in a superb location, the staff extremely friendly & when their renovations are finished it will be a good improvement.

With a night to spare in the south island before heading across Cook Strait in the ferry, we decided to spend it close by in Picton so we would be able to wake up in leisurely fashion, drop off the car and have a bite to eat before boarding. It was hard to choose a place because most reviews were mixed, and now we know why. Picton is a pretty place, if a bit quirky. Some hotels seemed overpriced for what they were offering so, others more of the holiday park variety, so after studying the mixed bag of information about Bay Vista, an old-style motel in a beautiful location, we thought that it seemed good value. Comments from previous travellers on this website that the place was run down had been responded to by management assuring future travellers that extensive renovations had been undertaken and the place was now perfect. So we booked in good faith that the management wouldn't lie - they did! Arriving mid-afternoon we found the place virtually deserted. The on-duty receptionist finally responded to a buzzer saying she would be 'over shortly'. About five minutes later she arrived and showed us to our suite. The key she used to open the door and then left in our keeping looked and felt like something out of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, the door itself (timber surrounds rotting) required a great deal of jiggling and a pretty big push to get it to open. I wondered about coming home later and having to sleep on the veranda because we hadn't learned the right jiggling and pushing technique. The bed wasn't made (sorry I haven't got to your room yet, the washing is still on the line, buzzed our hostess), the bathroom was indeed old and musty, and although the view was indeed as beautiful as promised, we were unable to sit on the deck and enjoy it because workmen were using very noisy heavy duty machinery to clean the exterior of the room next door (they'll be finished soon, she assured - they weren't). What was most disappointing was that, on further investigation, we found what we believed were much better rooms vacant (indeed it appeared that only one other was occupied), not that we could ask to change because the elusive hostess had advised that she would not be available (except for emergencies) till after we had left the next morning (she did make the bed before she left, thankfully). We asked about Internet availability and were told 'it was down' but we could try to hook in to the one used by the holiday park across the road.
This was the only real dive we experienced on our two week trip around New Zealand so it stands out , and although it was reasonably inexpensive (still over $100 AUD though) it was definitely not worth the price. If you are tempted to stay at Bay Vista, make sure you ask lots of questions and are guaranteed a renovated suite, at least!

Dear Writer

I am dissappointed that you experienced such an unpleasant stay with us. It is most upsetting to think that you actually stayed in a unit that you described as a "real dive". This sounds like something that is not fit for human inhabitation. You have identified that there were better units available which would have suited you, to relocate you to one of these would not have been a problem had we been aware of it.

As we have only 7 units, we are very much hands on from laundry, cleaning, gardening and reception. We do inform all guests when showing them to their units that we do not reside onsite ( at this stage) we live adjacent. If we are not onsite when you need us we are always contactable for information or assistance by dialing zero from the phone in your unit from 8am - 10pm when we close our reception. We had never considered calls after 10pm for emergencies only to be unreasonable as we do need to get some sleep. We had a full turnaround of 7 units to clean on the morning of the 12th so I am guilty of having being offsite having my lunch when you checked in between 2 and 3pm. This is also the reason why your bedcover was still on the clothesline. Although I am confused as to why this should be considered a negative as surely a nice clean fresh bed cover would be pleasing to most.

The national grading system in New Zealand is Qualmark who set a very high bench mark. Our grading is 3+ star, to achieve the 4+ star we are working towards, we had identified various areas that needed upgrading. We have invested considerably into redeveloping our reception area, replacing all exterior cladding, renewing doors and windows, painting and general enhancing of our motels. These improvments should have been finished by the end of October 2009 but continual wet weather had set us well behind schedule. The door with the rotting timber surrounds you have referred to, was not actually rot, it had just been made ready to have the new powder coated aluminium door fitted to match the window joinery. If it had contained rot this would have been a major job for us to replace.

Our improvements are looking great and we have had a lot of positive feedback. No time for improvements is a good time, and trades persons working near holiday makers, even though they are your husband and son, is not a good mix. We can, and do apologise, but cannot make amendments to your unpleasant memories of our motel.

Having been 30 years in this industry I cannot express enough to any guest at any motel, please give your host the opportunity during your stay to address any concerns that you may have, so that you are able to relax and can enjoy your well earned holiday.

Kind Regards
Kerry Scheerhoorn / owner
