The Villa Backpackers Lodge
Reviewed 26 May 2014

I stayed here at the end of the summer on my way to the North Island and absolutely loved it. The layout of the hostel is great and it is so easy to meet people, some of us were sitting around the fireplace at night and had a lot of fun. They also have a spa pool but I didn't use it.. The people in it seemed to enjoy it though.
Great was also the unlimited wifi, good chance to catch up with everybody at home. I stayed in a double room in the main building and while I could hear some noise from the living room in the evening they were quiet at night. I think the staff walked around after 10.30pm and made sure everybody kept the noise down. The bed was really comfortable and I had a great nights sleep.
Shame I only stayed for 1 night in Picton - Would have loved to chill out at this hostel for a while.

The staff of the centrally located hostel is very nice, as is the owner who gave us great advice on all activities, including queen charlotte track. The garden is very beautiful and features a hot tub, an oven and plenty of opportunities for a sunny breakfast. The kitchen is well equipped and clean, and the rooms are nice and not too small. We stayed in two different rooms, but both seemed a bit too pricey if compared to what you get for your money elsewhere, especially on the North Island.

Room was situated with the communal shower/toilet right next to side of bed.Very hard to sleep with people taking showers and toileting, even though there was a panel heater it was a very cold room with a lot of condensation on the windows.I woke scratching, thinking maybe it was what the sheets had been washed in but then my husband woke scratching too.We didn't stay in bed and went and sat in the car which was itch free and warmer. We were not told there was a $20 key deposit, which was no big deal but really should be noted to future stayers. We have both returned home still itchy and would not stay there again.

Room Tip: DONOT get put in a room near the shower if you wish to sleep at all

It is always disappointing to get a bad review.
I had our staff look at the review to work out which room was the issue, as the Double close to inside facilities doesn't have a heating panel.
The Villa is well over a hundred years old. This adds some charm but also presents comfort challenges in very cold weather which we try and combat with thermal curtains, heating panels, plug in heaters and spare blankets. Not to mention quality sheets, duvets and we are continually upgrading beds. This week we have put in a new multifuel burner and ducted the system throughout all double rooms.

We have staff quarters just off the Reception and they will respond if the doorbell is pushed or the door knocked on. My phone number is on the Reception door to deal with after hours issues. We always appreciate guests raising concerns or otherwise so we can try and improve. Sometimes with sheer weight of numbers over the busy season it can be interesting...but at the end of the day, you get what is paid for, The Villa is budget accommodation.
Picton is blessed with sandflies at times, certainly we have had nothing biting in the rooms or beds as we have a strict cleaning regime and after more than 20 years, we know to look for and don't take any half measures. We use standard washing powder and have never had an itching complaint.
A key deposit is normal in the Backpackers world, it is just a memory aid so we get our expensive security keys back.
I would look forward to a return visit and a better personal chat

This is one of the best hostels I've stayed at in New Zealand - it's amazingly clean, the staff are knowledgeable and helpful, the location is central to everything, the kitchen is well-equipped and spacious, and again very clean, the free breakfast and tea and coffee are nice little additions, as is the free apple crumble every night!

The beds are very comfortable and the rooms are nice and spacious; there are also plenty of bathroom facilities available so you never have to wait. There are so many positives about this hostel, I could go on...

The only slight negative is that it's quite an old building, and in the winter can get quite cold in the bedrooms. However, extra heaters are provided and you can help yourself to hot water bottles to warm yourself up.

We stayed her about 14 years ago and were very pleased. However I do not think much has been done since then as everything is decidedly tired-looking. We paid extra for an en-suite room - the shower room was rather grotty and there was no kettle, etc as other facilities at this price usually have. We stayed here for one night en route south to do the Otago Rail Trail and were going to stay on our return but we decided that it was not good value for money so cancelled. We also did not like the fact that the car had to be parked some distance away. I think it lives on its proximity to the ferry but we found another place equally as near and better value.

Room Tip: Do not opt for an en-suite as it is not worth paying extra for
