“Not bad”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 December 2011

I would first start by saying: do not stay in picton. There is nothing here and it is much better to continue onto Marahau, Kaikoura, or Nelson. But if you must, then Sequoia Lodge is ok. The kitchen is big, you get 50MB free internet, there is a hot pool, and free pudding. The place smells a bit of old/musky, but it is clean.

Stayed one night prior to taking the ferry. Reasonably priced, clean accomodation. The pudding was less than delicious, but tough to complain about this for what it is.

Stayed one night in a clean spacious twin room with own ensuite bathroom. Great location - only a few minutes walk into town for dinner and back to enjoy the FREE hot chocolate pudding & ice cream in the comfortable colourful communal dining room. Then a lovely hot soak under the stars in the outdoor spa pool.
In the morning, FREE breakfast before jumping on the ferry nearby.

Can't ask for more than that!! Much more than I expected from a Backpackers....

Wish I could have stayed for more than one night.

Staff were very helpful and did all they could to ensure you had a good time (gave the person I arrived with and myself a free room upgrade because they were quite busy in the normal dorms + altered the times of the free shuttle to the ferry terminal to suit everyone + allowed me to stick my wet stuff in front of the fire). Also nice of them to not require you to strip the bed on checkout

The extras were great...free shuttle to and from the ferry terminal, tasty chocolate pudding, solid breakfast and a spa pool.

Hostel facilities and cleanliness were very good.

My one criticism is that the mattress I had seemed quite thin/soft, but it didnt really disrupt my sleeping only an issue when I was sitting on the bed chatting.

I spent 2 nights in a single en suite. The price was good, the room was private and relatively quiet for a backpackers, and the heater worked. I think the staff is a little relaxed about changing the bedding -- the duvet was dirty, and one of my pillowcases had a long black hair stuck to it -- I am a blonde.

This was a nice and friendly backpacker that was comfortable. We were not on a backpacking holiday, but using a mix of backpacker hostels, motels, apartments and hotels, and this place fared pretty well against the motels we stayed at.

We booked the family ensuite - plenty of room. The shower was good and warm so no worries there!

I think this hostel has a friendlier atmosphere than some of the larger chain hostels. This is helped by the free chocolate cake - definitely have some of this - it rounds off the day nicely!

There are not enough great things that I can say about the Sequoia Lodge. Our visit began with a hearty greeting from Peter the proprieter of the lodge. He was extremley informative and eager to to answer any questions about Picton and the area. We then went to our room which was nothing fancy but extremely quaint, cozy, and spotless. Even though the bathrooms, showers, and kitchen facilities are shared by all of the residents everything was clean organized and really worked. I also can not say enough great things about the free nightly chocolate pudding that is made for all of the residents of the lodge. I can not wait till my next trip to New Zealand so I can stay there again. I was so impressed with my visit that I looked up the Sequoia's sister lodge in Nelson, The Tasman Bay Lodge. Once again the staff bent over backwards to help us out and make us feel comfortable. I would reccomend both locations to anyone looking for a relaxing calm hostel atmosphere.
