“LOVED IT!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 February 2011

There are two things that might put travellers off this hotel. Firstly, it is in an ugly building, and secondly, lots of coach parties use it. I found the second point no problem at all, and as regards the first, you can't see a building when you're inside it.

Reading other reviews, I think there might be quite a lot of variety in the quality of rooms. Ours was wonderful - beautifully furnished in excellent taste, with a balcony and a heavenly view over the harbour. There was even a little kitchenette, and the fact that the door opened on to an extenal corridor with a busy local road outside was no problem because the bathroom and the kitchen were between the bedroom and the outside door.
Without exception, staff were excellent, and the receptionists (who doubled up in the bar in the evenings) combined efficiency with that natural warmth and concern for their guests which makes for an enjoyable stay.

We ate in the restaurant three times, and the food was excellent, if rather too copious.

We moved here from the Mercure next door (see review), without doubt the worst hotel I have stayed at in over 40 in New Zealand. What a difference, and at NZ$155 it was a full $100 a night cheaper than the awful Mercure.

So, a lovely quiet room, great staff, wonderful position - we'll certainly stay here again on our next NZ visit.

We had a fairly spacious and clean room. It was a little dated but more with a homely feel to it. The hotel had a small outdoor pool and nice gardens to sit and relax (which the rooms opened out onto on the ground level or a balcony at the higher levels). The staff were friendly and accommodating; dinner was also nice with a special vegetarian wrap made especially for us.

Pulling up to this hotel I was a little concerned, the outside looked dated. But once we opened the door to our room we were immediately happy that we had selected the Picton Beachcomber. Our room had a balcony that overlooked the harbor. It was peaceful and quiet. The bed was comfortable and the spa bathtub was great. Dinner at the restaurant (someone obviously LOVES Christmas) was very good - both the fish and the steak were a great value. The location was very convenient to stores and restaurants. If we ever have the opportunity to visit Picton again we will definitely stay here.

You look out over the harbour. I stayed in a room on the level of the restaurant - highly recommended. Relaxing and drinks on my balcony overlooking the water. Food was good - was on a tour, but the a la carte looked great. Staff very helpful and friendly.

Spacious room that had angled very from balcony to harbor. Can be noisy and hot (no aircon). Did not eat there as it was an easy walk to more choice down by the harbour.

Very good value for size and location.

We used it as a staging post for a sailing charter which work well and the staff were happy to store our bags for the 4 nights between our two one night stays.

Stayed here for a night before our early morning ferry crossing back to the North Island. Room was clean and spacious. The only sink is the vanity unit in the main room which was a bit odd. Insulation of rooms was poor, as we discovered when the winds picked up in the middle of the night!

Stayed in Picton for one night only as had early morning crossing on the Interislander Ferry to the North Island. Picton is lovely for a ferry port. This motel was fine for a place to sleep in for one night. Room was clean and spacious. Did not eat in the restaurant so cannot comment on the food. Location is excellent with only five minutes to the local bars and cafes. Would stay here again if crossing on the ferry.
