We stayed here on the third day of our QC walk, and I was very impressed. Don't be put off by the liquidator notice on the website; this hotel is fully functioning and doing a great job! I was impressed by the friendly and efficient service, especially in collecting both me and our luggage from the Torea bay jetty, the pleasant room, the wonderful views (of course) and the delicious food. If you take the dinner, bed and breakfast deal be sure to let the dining room staff know this; the one who served us seemed unaware of the deal and gave us the full menu. There is a lovely bar area to sit, relax, look at the view and have a glass of wine; highly recommended.

The Portage was lovely. The rooms were clean, tastefully done, warm and welcoming. The views from the bedroom windows were amazing. The staff were helpful, pleasant and made you feel very welcome. The spot itself was just magical. So much to do in the area.

Stayed 3 nights in November for a wedding.
Gorgeous venue, especially as we were blessed with perfect weather.
Easy water taxi across from Blenheim and then met by staff to shuttle across to resort.
Basic rooms but adequate, no tv and phones in the room which I loved.
Amazing views over the Keneperu sounds.
Great food, helpful staff.
Many free activities to make the most of the water and easy to do part of the Queen Charlotte Track from the resort.
Maybe slightly overpriced but as we had a fantastic weekend I would totally recommend to others.

Room Tip: Maybe take some snacks and drinks (alcohol) over if heading from the main land as they are a little...

We had two nights at Portage while walking the QCT. Our room had a magnificent view over the Sounds and sitting out on the balcony in the evenings sharing a bottle of fine Marlborough wine ( or two) was a delight. The room wasn't luxurious by any means but it was clean and comfortable with all the facilities one would expect to find. Staff were welcoming and helpful and the hotel provided us with a shuttle service back up to the trail head on departure which was most welcome as it's a long slog up an uninspiring bitumen road otherwise. It's a pity this wasn't actually advertised as a service. Had we not thought to ask we would have had to walk.
There is a small shop but since the hotel is in receivership the shelves are almost empty. We wanted to pick up something to eat for lunch for the walk out but there was virtually nothing for sale. We ate our first meal in the restaurant and slough quite expensive, the food was of very high quality. The second night we ate on the terrace from the bar menu which was slightly less pricey and the fish and chips were wonderful. The continentsl brakfast buffet was very good with lots of options and at $15 a head quite reasonable especially considering we made ourselves a sandwich for luch as well since we were unable to buy food at the shop. On our 'rest day' we went out sea kayaking on the Sounds which was a magical experience. The guide was great, we picked mussels from the mussel farms and had lunch on a secluded beach. Equipment was a bit old and shabby but safe - but the Sea Kayaking is run by another company so no reflection on the hotel.

Room Tip: Make sure you get a room that overlooks the water

We stayed here 2 nights. When we arrived we were early and had to wait until the room was cleaned before we could check in. This was true for quite a number of visitors dotted around the bar, so I suspect they were trying to make a point. When we got to the room we looked out the large window onto a good sized balcony onto a magnificent view of the Kenepuru Sound. I looked around the room at the varnished and painted pine, checked the bathroom and was not impressed by the choice of stainless steel for their shower tray and wall (really recaptured the effect of a public urinal). There was a big comfortable bed in the middle of the room. My view was that we should check out, take the loss and move on but my wife insisted we stay. The staff here were good, service was excellent and so was the food (we had lunch and dinner both days of our stay). Breakfast was good. We slept really badly, first night because of an awful storm, second night because of the cicada, neither of these the fault of the hotel, but the basic construction of the lodges doesn't do much to insulate you from noise. I came around to the hotel because of it's staff and location. We stayed in a premier lodge room with a view, which I took to imply luxury but of course that's not what 'premiere' means so my mistake. The atmosphere at the hotel was not great despite a lot of hard work by the staff. Walking groups dominated the place while we were there and they seemed quite tired (sleeping stretched out on the comfy looking sofas) and fairly dour (maybe exhaustion from the days trek). I couldn't recommend it to like minded friends.

When we arrived there was just one word to describe this place: grey. It was raining, it was dull, and the grey colour all over this "resort" did not exactly lift my spirits. Everything is grey, from the reception to the furniture to the outside paint.

We had one of the Kowhai Lodge rooms. The interior was lovely and clean, the bed nice and big, and I supposed the view would've been nice in the sunshine. But again, too much grey. Shoddy grey plastic chairs on the balcony, grey flower pots with fake plants... and considering how expensive this room is you would expect a much higher standard, not an outdated TV with hardly any channels, an old fridge and fake plants. The walls were really thin, we were unlucky to have really noisy neighbours, so instead of bird songs and silence we had coughing, sneezing, nose blowing, TV and radios blaring away, the bathroom fan rattling away for ages at 6:30 AM and people stomping up and down past our room. This was infuriating!

On the positive:
The staff was really very friendly and helpful (mainly young foreigners) and went out of their way to help. There was free wireless in the lobby area and the washing machine was free (this was probably not planned as the main pay machine was broken). Despite other reviews we liked the food in the restaurant and I enjoyed some really good wine.

Overall, it was not worth the money and I tried to make the best of it as it was my 40th Birthday. It was not the wild green Kiwi wilderness I was hoping for so that was disappointing. But I’m sure some people like the 70s style of this place and despite all, the room was still lovely and the staff very nice!

Loverly views from balcony. Restaurant ok, even though it is a bit pricey, but what a shock to find my packed lunch for the track walk contained a rotten apple that had discharged through out the rest of my food Not very impressed!
No wonder the place is in receivership!!
