“Excellent lodge on the beach”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 April 2014

BotB is a lovely property, which is very well hosted by Maralyn and Ian. It’s in a very quiet location, right on the beach with stunning views. The rooms are large and comfortable, and have everything you’d need for a stay for a couple of nights. Breakfasts were beautifully presented – a work of art! There’s a hot tub in the garden, and a very well placed shower for hosing off on your way back from a dip in the sea.

A couple of nice unexpected treats are the drive to ferry in Ian’s convertible, and also a glass of wine and canapes with our hosts on the first night. They also recommended we eat at the Mudbrick vineyard, and booked a table for us, which turned out to be the best place we had eaten in NZ to date on the trip.

Would definitely recommend for a stay on Waiheke, and we’d return like a shot next time we are on the island.

Thank you very much for the kind review. We know we were only a small part of a 5 month tour of the world that you were on and feel privileged we helped make a part of your trip a memorable one. Keith (alias Ian) has many talents - included impersonating someone else by the sounds of it - however, given the itinerary you had it's not surprising that names become a blur after a while. Nevertheless, it was certainly our pleasure to host you both and trust the rest of your tour went well - keep in touch and hope we can have the opportunity to entertain you again at some point in the future. Warm regards Marilyn.

We stayed for 3 nights with our dear friends. Couldn't ask for better hosts and the breakfasts were to die for. We didn't get a choice but were asked if there was anything we didn't like, We were presented with 2 courses each morning, one fruit and one savoury, very nice. Very large rooms and lovely bathrooms. Thanks Keith and Marilyn for a great weekend.

I stayed here at a rate of $750 night. There are only 4 rooms in this house. It is a beautiful property at a scenic location, but it is unfortunate that the owners do not take pride in being business owners. When I was there, all 4 rooms were occupied. I had requested and paid for a room with a king bed and instead got a room with 2 queens. There was no advance notice to me of this change. For $750 a night you have certain expectation, such as wifi to work in all the rooms. I stayed at the Four Seasons Bora Bora for a comparable rate and all the amenities were perfect and functioning properly. At Breakfast on the Beach I complained numerous times about not having signal in my room which was probably less than 100 feet away from the router/modem. Why can't the owner stick independent wifi in each room? Why are they so cheap? There was so much dust in the room, on the remote control, on the glasses, cups, and any other surface I could find. Do they not pay someone to clean up in between guests? They were also stingy with the toiletries and towels, fortunately I brought my own. Breakfast is pre-set. I was not given any options nor asked preferences in advance. I do not eat eggs and that was the only option. The waitress didn't even know what was on the menu when I asked, even though she only had one menu and it was the same for all the guests. I had to remove the eggs and eat around them what was left. I went to a restaurant in town to eat afterwards since I was still hungry. If you stay here, don't pay more than $100/night. It's not worth any more. This was my last stop in New Zealand after staying at about a dozen different properties over several weeks. Some were less expensive and some were more expensive, but all of them exceeded the experience I had at BOTB.

Room Tip: Don't stay here.

Dear "Super Vixen". Given your review is totally out of the ordinary we must make a few comments in response.

Room. The room you booked and were given is a king room with two queen beds, of the same size, outlook and price as the other rooms.

WIFI. Yes the Wifi signal was weak in your room that day as your room access point was not working so your iphone had trouble picking the primary signal. We did explain that to you at the time and also offered you a laptop to use in your room. You still had excellent wifi reception throughout the public areas and free use of the library computer, broadband and printer. We are terribly sorry for this inconvenience

Dust. Well this we cannot explain as your room had only just been serviced with the departure of other guests including new glassware. How dust could have appeared from the dishwasher to your room in such a short space of time is most strange. Once again we apologies for this and trust you were still able to drink your complimentary wine from those glasses supplied.

Towels We have normally found that 2 bath towels, 2 spa towels, 2 hand towels and two face cloths, a bath mat and full selection of toiletries is normally enough for two people staying one night. Had you asked we would have not hesitated to supply you with more.

Breakfast When you made the booking, and again when shown through the Lodge on arrival, you were advised that we provided a 2 or 3 course set breakfast changing each day, which is why we make a specific point to find out any dietary issues or foods you did not eat. If you forgot to mention this we most certainly would have still provided you with an alternative had you requested this at the time.

We pride ourselves on providing a particularly high standard of service and had you made any complaints at the time we most certainly would have done everything possible to fix the problem. The fact you have chosen to complain in hindsight in a very public way without addressing these issues with us during your stay speaks volumes. We can only apologise after the fact which makes for a rather punitive response. In summary, we trust readers of these reviews will conclude there is something rather untoward with yours. Those who have stayed will confirm we are very much engaged with our guests and honest - a level of courtesy we would like to think all our guests will respect.

My husband and I stayed for one night while visiting the island. Keith and Marilyn are the perfect hosts. The room was beautiful, large and open, looking straight out on to the beach. After a morning of travelling around the island it was a wonderful retreat to sit and watch the water while enjoying our welcome platter and bottle of wine only to be topped by the complimentary carafe of port and chocolates when we returned from dinner later that night.
The breakfast was awesome and when they promise you wont need lunch they were right!
From my first email enquiring about room availability through to our goodbyes Keith and Marilyn could not have been more helpful arranging dinner and a wine tour for us. We were just sorry we could not have stayed longer, it was a perfect intimate, quiet place to stay.

Thank you for the kind review. It was great to host you and your husband for your short but memorable stay on Waiheke. We know you had a few months of work to finish off in Auckland and trust it all went well and you managed to be reunited with your husband back in Australia. Remember, you can always consider immigrating to NZ - that would certainly be a change from current treads!!! Thanks again and warm regards, Marilyn and Keith.

We arrived after a 2 day stopover in Tokyo, having split the flight out from the UK. Keith and Marilyn gave us such a warm welcome - they are great hosts. We were blown away by our wonderful bedroom - it was huge , and so comfortable, beautifully furnished and decorated. We couldn't believe how lucky we were to have Breakfast on the Beach as our first stop and it proved to be a wonderful way to start our New Zealand holiday 'proper'.
It is a perfect place for some luxury R&R - the decor is wonderful and when it came to breakfast itself, that was presented so beautifully, plus being very very delicious. Nicky and I kept pinching ourselves because everything was so wonderful - we cannot speak too highly about our experience here. One afternoon we had to sit in the garden with oysters and Sauvignon Blanc with our hosts and the other guests!!
It is a great location, and we enjoyed a walk round the bay, and then up into vineyard country.
It is a short walk into the town where we had a lovely evening in the Oyster Inn; one evening we booked at the Mudbrick Estate where the menu is paired with some beautiful wines. We were in heaven! If you enjoy good food and wine, then go to Mudbrick.
If we are to return to NZ, this would be our first stop....we cannot recommend it highly enough!

My husband & I spent a night here on our recent tour of New Zealand. Out of all the hotels, lodges & spas we stayed at this was our absolute favourite. The boutique nature of the lodge gives it an instant feel of exclusivity & the attentiveness of the hosts throughout our stay was second to none. Our room was luxurious and very tastefully decorated. There were a number of touches such as home made treats & complimentary wine in our room that really made this place stand out. The vintage port left in our room whilst we were out for dinner, turn down service with no need to ask, complimentary canapés & drinks before guests go out for dinner on the first night, lifts to & from the boat, the list goes on.

The name is well suited as the breakfast here is out if this world - without doubt the best breakfast we've ever been presented with - ever! The attention to detail in preparation and presentation was exceptional and the quality of produce used really came through in the taste

We can't recommend Breakfast on the Beach highly enough - thanks to Keith & Marilyn for such an enjoyable visit and such a well run, well executed business - 10/10

Room Tip: All rooms are amazing!

Thank you for making our stay here so relaxing. Keith was very helpful in arranging a very nice table at a vineyard restaurant overlooking the sea and the skyline from Auckland on Dec 25th. Marilyn's breakfast is awesome and is clearly setting a top end benchmark for B&B's in NZ. Our young kids loved the place too. In particular the owner's dog Hollie. It's fair to say that all other guests were couple's without children. I assume that's predominantly the case. We used Waiheke Island/ this B&B for our first stop after the long-haul flight from Europe. Very easy to access from the airport via a bus to Auckland ferry terminal and with a ferry to Waiheke Island. Marilyn was very helpful in suggesting this way. Our children have often asked us to get back to NZ and to this nice place with the dog one day. Enough said.
