“Marvelous history”
Reviewed 31 December 2011

The restoration work on this site is exceptional, it was still wip when we were there but certainly worth the drive. It is easy to conjure up the images of the workers building the tunnels and gun emplacements. W loved the story of taking them all over to the Coromandel to the pub that had been commandeered for the occasion.

“spooky adventure into the darkness”
Reviewed 11 September 2011

I have to defend the old lady, who is running the place, she was very nice with us, provided all the necessary information, and she gave us 2 torches for the price of 1, so we were very satisfied with her assistance.
The place itself is full of history, you can almost hear the marching of soldiers around. The tunnels are very spooky, you should only go if not afraid in pitch dark. We did the 1/2 hour tour, that was enough in the darkness and silence :)

“Unique attraction that everybody should experience at least once”
Reviewed 10 July 2011

There is nothing quite like Stony Batter. Tucked away on a tiny island outside Auckland, at the end of a long dirt road it's a shock to discover how vast the tunnel complex is in such a tiny country. Sadly, years of neglect resulted in vandals leaving grafitti, rubbish and damage in their wake. Vowing to preserve this historic complex, a team of dedicated locals took out tonnes of rubbish, removed grafitti and made the tunnels safe for the public. World war two veterans also contributed pricless antiques for the public to enjoy, including old engines. There is nothing quite like daring to turn off your torch and realize how helpless you would be without it. I greatly admire the dedication of the trust and the volunteers who strive to make this one of new zealand's finest monuments to kiwi ingenuity and courage. My only issue is that sadly, one of the volunteers is very surly, distrustful, rude and paranoid. Also dont try to take photos as this is considered an insult to the veterans and community who feel that it diminishes their efforts. As much as we enjoyed the attraction unfortunately we have no desire to return. Best to leave your things in the car and go for the long tour sans baggage, this should avoid any confrontation. If you want to take photos contact the DoC at least 1 week in advance.
