“Fantastic Honeymoon and Birthday”
Reviewed 27 March 2014

My wife and I visited Paradisus Rio de Oro Resort for two weeks starting 5 March 2014. Overall this is probably the finest resort we've ever stayed at. On arrival we were greeted by really friendly staff who were very pleased to see us and offered us champaign and a cold face towel. Check in was easy, seamless and swift transfer to our room. The room was very spacious, clean, tidy excellently situated, in fact everything we wanted and more. The food at this resort was truly amazing with the restaurant being exceptional, the buffet has a massive selection with a number of freshly cooked food stations, pasta, salads, griddles etc. The thing that really makes this place stand out is the staff; they really just want you to have a nice time, this was shown throughout our stay and was particularly apparent on my wife's birthday, I can honestly say that nothing was too much trouble and they definitely went the extra mile.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the staff for making our honeymoon so special.

Room Tip: We stayed in a junior deluxe room (bungalow) with a garden area and walled outdoor shower, which was...

Wow Wow Wow if you are looking for a little piece of heaven on earth this is the place to go. From the time we stepped off the coach and were greeted with a Cuban band cold flannels and Champagne to the time we stepped back on again accompanied by the band, I could not fault any part of this holiday. The accommodation was first class, the choice of restaurants and the food on offer were excellent and the staff could not do enough to make your stay perfect. The excursions arranged by the hotel were superb showing the true Cuba at a fraction of the cost of travel companies. The trip to a fishing village, school and farm was well worth a visit. Taking a ride on a horse and cart around the local villages was some thing else and cost around £15 pounds for 4 of us. The flight with Thomson on the Dream Liner just added to the perfection of it all what a shame that they are pulling out of Cuba in just 2 weeks (why of why). A perfect holiday saving now to return very soon.

We were totally pleased with our week at the Paradisus the first week of March. We have been to Cuba once before(Havana, Trinidad and Veradero tour) and understand the limitations that the Cubans have. The service was topnotch. We were happy with the food. The French and Japanese restaurants especially were wonderful. Our chef in the Japanese restaurant was a lot of fun. We weren't quite as pleased with the Mediterranean but that might have been because of our choice of menu. The buffet was good although the food was not as hot as we Canadians like. Both the pool and beach restaurants were great. There was a lot of topnotch entertainment. We quite enjoyed the pianist in the lobby every evening before we went to dinner. The biggest plus is everyone is so friendly and seems to be happy at their job. We went on 2 day trips which were also great. We like to go to different places because there is so much to see in this world but if we were going back to that area we definitely would go back to the Paradisus.

We just returned from another very enjoyable stay at the Paradisus Rio de Oro. We have been there a number of times, and we always enjoyed it very much. The staff is excellent, most of them have been at the hotel for many years. I am always amazed that they instantly recognize returning guests, it truly adds to the spirit of the hotel. Cubans are a great-spirited people, a main reason why we keep returning to Cuba and to this hotel. Many reviewers have positively commented on rooms, pool, beach and so on, no need to further comment to that. I just want to add that we really enjoy the beautiful garden-like setting of the grounds, reflecting the hard work of the many talented gardeners. We have also met Carlos, the new Food and Beverages Manager who has only been on the job for a few weeks. I saw him working from early morning to late at night, always friendly and courteous, he certainly is a great asset to the hotel.

However, compared to our previous visits, we noticed several deficiencies which should not really occur, considering the hotel has a 5-star rating. Here they are:
Room related:
- no tissues (i.e. Kleenex) for the entire two weeks. I guess not too much of a problem for gentlemen, but certainly for ladies.

Buffet restaurant related:
- no freshly squeezed orange juice, just a mediocre substitute. I heard that quite a few of orange plantations in Cuba were affected by a disease, effectively destroying most of the orange harvest. While this is ‘force majeure’, perhaps a better substitute could have been found.

- no bacon, just a substitute consisting of processed meat, slightly reminiscent of Spam. Mind you, there was very good ham available, but if you prefer bacon, it left you only with the choice of the substitute. During the 14 days we had real bacon only twice.

- white wine during most of the time was of very low quality. Although I prefer white wine, I switched to Rosé, because I found the white wine not palatable at all. Towards the end of our stay, a different brand of white wine was served with was quite an improvement.

- the selection of vegetables had changed from previous visits, some of it not as good as we found during earlier vacations. However, I believe it was the first time we saw brussel sprouts on a regular basis, good. Compared to earlier years, all vegetables had been salted too much for our liking. I am aware that over the years, a number of guests had commented that the vegetables were ‘bland’, but this is a matter of opinion, we use very little salt in our home cooking. Each table has a salt and pepper set, and one can always add seasoning.

Again, all these food issues relate to the buffet restaurant only. We went to most of the a la carte restaurants, fine as always. We always enjoyed the Cuban restaurant El Bohio, but this time it was especially great. Thanks to the cooks and staff at the El Bohio !

Overall, these items are not major, but nevertheless they should be brought to the attention of the hotel management. I am sure that they will be addressed to the best of their abilities, and at the same time, these items will not distract us from returning to the Paradisus next year!

This was our 4th visit to Paradisus and again we were not disappointed! A wonderful hotel in beautiful location, staff cannot do enough for you - special thanks to Carlos for making sure everything was just right! Yes the bottom of the pool could do with repainting but who spends their holiday at the bottom of the pool!! Fantastic holiday would recommend without hesitation. Thanks also to the many friends we made!

We just returned Sunday from another amazing experience at the Paradisus. This 10 day vacation was our fourth there and it will be our destination again next year. The staff are truly amazing, but two scooter rides through the mountains and tiny villages, with virtually everyone smiling or nodding hello, only goes to show that the Paradisus staff aren't "acting" friendly, they are simply reflecting the true spirit of the Cuban people. Fabulous service, long-term staff, humour, courtesy, and dedication are all components of the Paradisus experience. The rooms are very well kept, the grounds are immaculate, and the beach, ocean, and pool are fantastic to just hang out at all day long. It's also great that WiFi is again available in the lobby, by the pool, and at the snack bar. At 4 1/2 CUC/hour though, it's not inexpensive! I wish they offered larger blocks of time for less money. Tamara, the spa coordinator, is, as always, extremely welcoming and always willing to help out. Also, i have to mention Carlos, the new manager of food and beverages for the hotel. While he has only been on the job for three weeks, he seems to be everywhere...from the main dining room, to the specialty restaurants, the bars, snack bar and the terrace, and from breakfast until after dinner, he was welcoming, gracious, and extremely interested in feedback, especially constructive criticism. Amazing to see a senior manager bussing tables, waiting on customers, working alongside his staff, and with obvious patience and care. I suspect the already very good food service at Paradisus will be taking a very large step forward under the direction of this young, passionate "foodie". A great addition to the hotel. The four of us are already looking forward to next year at the Paradisus. We've often talked about going elsewhere, and we've had many years of travel experience, but we are convinced that anything in the Carribbean, and especially Cuba, would be a disappointment compared to Paradisus Rio de Oro. One word of caution. Kleenex tissues are no longer provided, so bring your own.

Room Tip: We've stayed at the Royal Suites, the bungalows, and the JR. suites. All are totally fine, thoug...

We just came back from a wonderful week at the Paradisus de Oro . It was our 4th trip to Cuba, but our 1st trip to Holguin. It didn't start out well, with a 5 hour (strangely unexplainable) delay in our flight, which meant we didn't arrive at the hotel until after 2 am. We were greeted with a swift and friendly check-in and a soothing glass of champagne. We also had a drink at the all-night bar, as well as food and chatted with the always friendly night staff...what a great way to start a vacation!
The room was lovely, a little dated maybe, a few dents in the floor and some deterioration in the bathtub, but large and comfortable, with a huge balcony. However, we spent very little time there, preferring to take in all the sights and sounds that were available...and there were many!
The beach at the Paradisus is beautiful, very clean, and always a chair available. We took advantage of the available watersports, particularly the Hobie Cats...once again, the staff was friendly, courteous and helpful.
Like the beach, the pool area was also clean and lots of deck chairs. Yes, there is a little paint peeling in the pools, but if you have the time to notice and frown at something like that, you really need to visit a wealthier country than Cuba! The bar staff was a lot of fun, and there was always an activity available if you get bored soaking up the sun.
The food...mmmmmm.....in a word, fantastic!!!! Always an amazing selection, always hot and fresh, and lots of options ready to be made right in front of your eyes. This refers to the buffet. We only tried 2 a la cartes, but highly recommend the Japanese restaurant, tons and fun and a great ambience.
We were lucky to link up with one of the wonderful horse and buggy "cowboys", Fidel, that are available at the front of the resort. He took us on 2 excursions to some of the small towns and villages that surround the resort areas as well as an amazing hike to the Indian caves buried deep in the Cuban forest. I would highly recommend this type of adventure, and this particular guide! We also visited an amazing off-site restaurant, one of the many small businesses that have been initiated by Cubans since the rules have loosened. La Maison is well worth the trip!
One of the highlights of our stay was the Beach Party , very well run by the Activity staff at the Paradisus. Nothing quite compares to dancing under the stars, next to the ocean, to an enticing array of authentic Cuban music.
We took this vacation with another couple, all of us in our late 40's-50's. We loved the resort for many reasons, it isn't a huge party spot, but if you are looking for music and fun, it is certainly available. We all fell into our beds each night, pleasantly exhausted from sun, fun and adventure.
I have read some of the other reviews and yes, the resort is aging and needs a little TLC but that is a small issue from my perspective. If you are looking for sumptuous surroundings and being pampered hand and foot, maybe try Hawaii instead of Cuba. We met people who were at the resort for the 14th time and I totally understand why they keep coming back. The staff, the ambience, the food, the energy, and especially the utter beauty that surrounds you keeps people coming back.
And oh yes, I almost forgot, make sure to visit the spa while you stay, you won't regret it!
