If you're driving on US-395 in this area, set aside 20 minutes, turn off the highway and do the loop. The reward you get is the Sierra Nevada serving up some of its best scenery.
There are plenty of turnouts along the road. You can't help but admire all the different scenes - from lakes, to rocky crags, from streams to pine covered valleys and sheer granite mountains. Absolutely beautiful.

If you are familiar with vacations to Mammoth for skiing or summer activities you might want to make a day trip further up Highway 395 (about 25 minutes) and turn into June Lake Loop. They have recently reopened the mountain for winter skiing but more importantly.....fishing season has opened and there are 4 lakes in the loop that offer some great fishing opportunities. June, Gull, Silver & Grant Lakes.

The BIG ROCK RESORT is right on June Lake with available lodging in cabins of various sizes. Prices are more than reasonable, but book early because they fill up fast. The resort has boat rentals from 7:00am-7:00pm and the fishing on June Lake is amazing. They do offer a few pontoons for larger groups or big families. We had 6 adults (all with poles in the water) for an all day party. It's serene and clean, a beautiful place to vacation. Be sure to obtain either a 2 day or annual fishing license as they check regularly and will fine you if you ae fishing without one. Also be aware of the limits that you can catch. Going back in July...Can't wait!!

From the north it starts out just so-so but it gets better to the point of being incredible. The waterfalls were beautiful so have your camera ready! There is a place to park after you pass Grant Lake, so my recommendation is to drive into June Lake, go past the lake and start from the south to see what you'll want to take pictures of since there are very few places to pull over. There are restaurants, lodging and gift shops in June Lake.

This is a beautiful area in the Eastern Sierras. There are four gorgeous lakes...

June Lake - there is a swimming beach in the summer, cool mountain water. In this area there is also volleyball courts. We have also fished there. There are boat rentals as well.

June Lake Town - this is a small town with some mountain stores like fishing and hunting gear, groceries, etc. Tiger Bar is a favorite for locals in town.

Gull Lake - We have enjoyed paddle boats here as well as boating. We have fished from the shore. There is a fun playground here for the children. There is also a tennis court. Great area for picnics.

June Mountain - Ski area - good place to go when the area has snow.

Silver Lake - Silver Lake is another lake in the area. This one is good for boating as well as fishing. There is also hiking trails that will take you to Gem Lake and other mountain lakes and country side. Silver Lake has a store and cabin rental. In the summer, there is also horse rental and pack mules for rent (i.e.. to take your backpacking gear in the back country).

Rush Creek - We've been in fishing boots so many times to enjoy catching trout for dinner.

Grant Lake is more of a desert looking lake - you can often see deer in the meadows. It is both a boating and fishing lake and in the summer some water skiing as well.

In the winter, the area is good for mountain sports.....

Just east of Grant Lake is a nice hike to Parker Lake,

Its an enjoyable place - which many miss to see.
We have enjoyed it for years......There is lodging and other restaurants on the loop.
There is also a lot of camping possibilities throughout the loop area,)

My husband and I stayed at Gull Lake Lodge in June Lake, where we had a 4-room 'apartment.' And our dog was free! Their position is the a dog is part of the family. The first day it snowed a light fluffy type of snow all day. We were still able to enjoy the loop and get some beautiful pictures. The second day was terrific. They sun shone brightly all day and snow was on the ground in the trees and bushes most of the places. We took some beautiful pictures at June Lake and at Silver Lake, which were our two favorites in the loop area. June Lake is not very far from Mammoth Lakes and Convict Lake, which we also enjoyed. It was a fantastic 4-day, 3-night trip.
