“"Ideal Camping"”
Reviewed 26 November 2012

Usually don't like sharing little "hidden secrets", but was prompted to write this review because of the wonderful graciousness of the Hosts at this campsite as well as the cleanliness of the campground overall. We have been coming here every year for the past 5 years. Why?

Location: Situated just north of Durango (a wonderful mountain town, great to tour) on the San Juan Byway which makes it easily accessible should you be driving north to Silverton and beyond or South to Durango.

Some Amenities: 30/50 AMP hookups and water (no problems with hooking up), very clean restrooms, no dump station (but you are close to town and can dump there for free), good size fire pits/picnic tables at each site.

Activities: Kayaking on the Lake (which from our premium lakefront campsite was ony a few lovely paces away) or just up the highway (4 miles or 15 minutes away) at Electra Lake for a nominal fee of $20, biking (mountain/road) a plenty, immediate access to hiking trails, fishing (wish you nothing but the "best" of luck with this one for we caught not a 1 fish), bird-watching or casual walking at your disposal.

FYI: This campground fills up quite quickly during the summer months so reservations are a must. "First Come-First Served" or "Walk-ups", upon snagging a site (albeit a premium one) once realizing the "goodness" of the setting, usually stay for a bit so waiting for an available campsite would try your patience. The "premium" lakefront campsites offer beautiful, absolutely wonderful and relaxing unobstructed views of the lake, however you will pay more for these sites that line the Lake, but they are worth every "dollar"! Most sites in this campground offer privacy with satisfying space between each site. Keep in mind, during certain times of the year the mosquitoes can be a deterrent but only during the late afternoons (just before dusk for an hour or so) and only really affect those campers that are closer to the lake.

We look forward to coming back in 2013 and hope that this review was helpful! Happy Camping!

“Simply beautiful!”
Reviewed 14 April 2012

We spent one night in Haviland Lake campground and were overwhelmed by the beauty of this campground. The sights are very private, surrounded by trees and each has a view of the lake. It was simply beautiful and the lake is gorgeous. And although it has vault toilets, they were incredibly clean (and even smelled good). You can tell that the hosts take pride in this site. The only complaint were the Mosquitos but what can you expect being right on the lake. Love this campsite and cannot wait to return.

“Haviland Lake is absolutely beautiful”
Reviewed 27 September 2009

My husband and I briefly made a stop to Haviland Lake on a summer vacation from Durango to Silverton. The view is spectacular and peaceful and we plan to go back soon to do some camping and fishing.

“limited out on rainbows lickety split.”

fish off the pier by the boat ramp. weight on bottom of line and a # 12 or 14 egg hook 18inches up above weight. the wife beat me 4 to 2 in less than half an hour. paulzeik salmon eggs never fail or the pink yellow swirl power bait works well. berkley crappie nibbles with salmon eggs, garlic powder, and any liquid fish attractor ,just a couple of drops mix well .not to thin or it falls off the hook to fast. it works good.
