“I survived”
Reviewed 10 September 2013

Definitely not a place to go for any of the creature comforts we are accustom to. Heat? What's that? Oh, the "cottage" has a fireplace......oops, can't use it. Don't take a shower over 5 minutes, you'll run out of hot water. The "cottage" smelled like an old museum. Nothing quaint or charming here folks. You have to schlep everything you'll need by ferry and then hope someone on the island will give you a ride to the place your staying. You cannot bring your car. Gotta leave that in a parking lot and take a school bus to and from the parking lot to the dock.
Rustic is the word that comes to mind. No Internet or tv in most areas of the island. Hard to keep toddlers entertained during inclement weather and stuck in a "cottage".
People are very friendly and eager to talk to non locals.
Restaurant is a very loose definition of the eating establishments (except the hotel restaurant). Basically they are glorified trailers. The local grocer is nothing better than your local quick stop.
Beaches were basically empty and offered no accommodations (we were there first week of sept so it was the off season) Deserted and felt off the grid.
Good place to go if you don't want people to find you or you want to lose touch with the world and what's going on.

“Peaceful island. Step into the past”
Reviewed 28 July 2011

Not much to do in Chebeague but if that appeals to you, why not rent a house? You don't need a car - there is an island man who "rents" bikes for free ( bring your own helmet and brakes), there are lovely little beaches though the water is too cold ( it is Maine), there is a library, a rec center, and a golf course. There is also a clay court which costs $10 an hour to rent right near the golf. You need to bring supplies from the mainland but the little grocery store in town is open seven days and has everything you need plus helpful answers. Oh, and plenty of fresh lobster, clams and a little farm stand where vegetables are bought on an honker system
