Went to Gallatin National Forest with friends & had a wonderful time. We went to Hyalite Lake where we had a relaxing lunch while our dogs swam in the cool water on the hot day. The lake was beautiful with the snow capped mountains in the background. Great place to spend a hot day.

Have been here many, many times while visiting Bozeman for hikes with son and his family that live there. Absolutely beautiful place. The hikes, the falls, the lake area and breathtaking scenery. This last trip the park was still closed due to snow and rock slides but we walked to the Practice Rock area and came back later in the week to climb the hill. Our son, an experienced rock climber lost his life on Practice Rock Sept 2, 2013.

This gem is not well advertised...maybe locals want to keep tourists away!! Gallatin Nat'l Forest is huge, and PART of Gallatin is huge 34,000 Hyalite Canyon. Go south on 19th street in Bozeman and drive 5 miles to Hyalite Canyon Road. There IS a small sign! There is a map a bit down that will show different areas of interest. Take a picture of this map to keep your bearings. We went to Grotto Falls and Palisades Falls and enjoyed both walks very much. Grotto Falls is VERY beautiful. Nice picture opportunities. The Grotto Falls walk is 1.5 miles one way. Palisades Falls is .5 miles each way. Nice picnic facilities are available as well. Well worth your time. Oh, there is camping available and it looked like there would be great options to camp next to water. Recommended place!!
