If you've got the opportunity, definitely visit the White Mountains.
Coming from the UK we flew into Boston and drove up the I-93 to get here easily. We stayed in North Woodstock, which was great because the river has a small cascade there that you can tube down -no charge, just at your own risk so make sure the water level is high enough.
It's also a great base because it's so easy to get to everything from here. We did zip wiring, walked up the Flume, visited the Polar Caves, walked through Lincoln Woods, went on the Cannon Mountain aerial tramway, drove across the Kancamagus highway to do Sabbaday Falls, the boulder loop, boulder gorge and the Colbath historic house, went up Mt Washington etc. etc. Plenty to do and no complaints from the teenagers! Would love to see it in autumn with all the beautiful colours and also in winter to see how dramatic it must look.

Went Camping up in the White Mountains in New Hampshire and what a beautiful place it was. The camp grounds offered daily activities for the children and well as a game room with pool tables and flat screen tv's. The site had a swimming pool with water slides, a general store and two bathroom facilities complete with hot showers. The surrounding are was breathtaking if you are in the New England area and like camping the White Mountains are a must do.

These are not the Alps, so don't expect significant height, but beauty, serenity, clear skies, lots of mountain overlooks and somewhat dense forest are abundant. Go up at night and check out the stars. Take in some of the special off-shoots along the drive. Take snacks and drinks with you. Although you are not many miles from town, the speed limits are very low and you don't move fast through the mountains. Ranger station is a must. Get some maps so you can plan what sections you want to see. Very helpful staff. Some of the things along the way have fees, but if we want things to be nicely maintained, we have to be willing to help with the cost, and the fees are minimal.

Visit the White Mountains for beautiful panoramic views, especially during the fall foliage season. (Note that Fall Foliage comes at a slightly different time each year, so check the internet, call the tourism department or check with someone in the area before traveling.)

The drive in cool chilly weather was excellent. The audio CD guide provided for the tour is quite informative and exhaustive. It was a thrilling experience to climb to the summit in chilling and gushing winds in hazy visibility
