Very nice hike. Took the #9 from Sylvan Lake (which is beautiful). We are 60 and 55 and we had no problems.

Every Spring the Lakota people trek to their homeland, He Sapa(Black Hills) and make prayers & offerings to welcome the thunder beings back. The Thunder is a significant part in the Lakota spirituality & way of life. And we get lotsa good exercise hiking the 6 mile hike.

We hiked trail # 9 beginning at Sylvan Lake to Harney Peak a few weeks ago. It was supposed to be a moderate hike, but it took us 5 hours to do it. We are in the over 50 crowd and it took about 3 days for us to recover. We hiked it with my teenage grandkids, and 2 experienced trekkers from Barcelona. They did it in 4 hours. The weather was beautiful, but it was very rough and uneven for most of the trail. The view from the top was spectacular though. Take at least 2 waters with you. The only fee was the State Park Pass.

We took Trail #9 up and trail #4 down, and we enjoyed Trail #4 much more than #9. There is better scenery on #4 than #9. TIP: If you plan took take trail #4 on the way up or on the way down park at the Little Devil's Tower trailhead instead of at the Sylvan Lake trailhead. I wish we would have known to do this. We went up this trail with a 9, 7, and 4 year-old and no one had a problem getting up or down. The only complain was that the beginning of Trail 9 is really quite boring (and hot with no shade)! I think next time we would take Trail 4 up and down.

We enjoyed the hike up Harney Peak. We hiked up trail #4 (less traveled) and back down trail #9. There were thistles along the edges of the narrow trail. The bugs happened to be bad when we went - lots of little nats! We didn't stay at the top as long as we would have otherwise. As long as you keep moving you'll be okay.
We got to see some mountain goats off in the distance on the hike down!
