“An Excellent Family Hike”

Fifth Water Hot Springs
Reviewed 30 June 2013

This is approximately a 2.5 mile hike to reach up into the mountain. The trail is well maintained and not all that steep. We saw several families with young children at the site. The forest service has built pools that you can soak in, so hiking up with a bathing suite on is a good idea, except maybe in winter. There is a toilet facility at the start of the trail. The website I provided gives directions to this location.

To start off, I want to say I visited the springs over a year ago, so I'm not sure if this is the right one, but judging by the pictures I saw on another website, I'm pretty sure these are the springs I went to.

We went in November, 2011, and I had no idea it was going to be such a long walk! It seemed to talk forever the way there, but once I knew how long it was, it didn't seem that long on the way back. We went when it was dark out, so there were only a few people there, and we eventually had the place to ourselves. There were two different areas, one "lower" spring, which wasn't as warm, and then the "upper" springs that were very warm and comfortable. Since it was winter, we got to experience the warmth of the water while it snowed above our heads, which was simply amazing. My sister took me as a surprise, and I don't think the surprise could be any better. It was an incredible experience that I won't forget.

A series of small pools, created when water from underground hot springs mixes with the stream. You can chose your favorite temperature by picking one of the pools. There is a small waterfall, very picturesque.
It takes an hour from the Three Forks trailhead to get there, a very pleasant hike, not too hard even for little ones. Colorful rocks, forest, stream, all worth the effort, while the free hot spring is an icing on the cake.
Get a good description from the Web, or ask, the trail is not really marked for this specific direction. Try to get there early, it can get really crowded around noon, even on a week day, and it makes the experience less amazing..
The description we read warned about snow and mud but the trail was dry on April 4, 2013, 2 days after a heavy snowfall in Cottonwood Canyons, not far from there.
Strongly recommended as a day off from skiing if your kids don't feel like hitting the slopes non-stop.
