I've been to most of the Smithsonian museums several times, and the American History museum remains my favorite. I see something new every time I go. My favorite exhibit is the food exhibit, where you can see a replica of Julia Child's kitchen, and watch clips of her cooking. There are a couple of children's areas for different ages of kids. Little ones will be sure to love the Wegman's play area. There is also a fun area for older kids about creativity and inventions, where kids can make their own prototypes.
There are a couple of nice gift shops here as well, with different themes. For more traditional patriotic/presidential sorts of souvenirs, go to the gift shop upstairs. The downstairs gift shop has more varied gifts and souvenirs.

Great. Super organized, friendly staff and well maintained. Loved the wars exhibition, lots of history including the american view and actions to each war. Loved the first ladies exhibition.

The exhibitions were quite superficial, not a lot of content or valuable history lessons here. You’ll find things like the president’s PJs and the first lady’s dress, but not much else. I also thought some of the content was biased at best, and quite out of touch with modern times (no need to spend more than 5 min in the war exhibit to know what I mean). If you’re not American, it’s hard to appreciate what to me seemed more like a passable showcase of patriotism and pop culture than actual history.

In terms of the facilities, some rooms had no A/C and smelled funky, exhibits were haphazardly arranged around several floors with no clear sense of direction, purpose, or historical relevance. The line to get in was long, although it moved pretty quickly (~20-30 minutes at 4pm).

Had I paid, this museum would get one star from me, but gotta give it some credit for being free.
