Learned in the Smithsonian Geology and Gem exhibit (Mining) that the very top piece was made of aluminum, which was as valuable or more so than silver when it was constructed. We were happy to get many glimpses of the monument as we toured the city. Sadly, it was closed for an electrical upgrade so we had to just enjoy the exterior.
