I was reluctant - but it was amazing - took the docent tour - the stories behind the portrait and the subject were amazing - and the art was so different. Gallery of the Presidents ranges from traditional (Washington and Lincoln) to modern (Kennedy and Clinton) - Americans from all walks of life are featured (Katherine Hepburn to LL Cool J to inventors such as Edison and Singer). The building itself is exceptionally beautiful - from the patents library to the third floor that once hosted Lincoln's second inaugural ball, to the enclosed courtyard in the center. Extremely well done, rangy, interesting, and best of all, its free.

I know it should have been obvious, but I would have loved to have seen more than portraits. They do have some amazing work, but I wouldn't spend more then 2-3 hours here.

I would go back again! I am not a big art person so I really wanted to skip it but I loved the portraits! The " cool "exhibit was my favorite!

I've lived in DC for over 4 years and just keep coming back to the National Portrait Gallery - you could spend days seeing all the exhibits! Before coming here, I wasn't a big fan of art museums, but the PG is great and has a great mix of things to see. They also have a really cute cafe for breakfast/brunch or lunch and menu offerings are tied to the special exhibit going on at the moment. Be sure to check out their amazing collection of Monet, Manet, Picasso, Renoir, etc. - hard to believe it's free!

This museum is a must. It has the portraits of all the past Presidents and much more along with special exhibits. It is attached to the American Museum of Art as well. The special exhibit COOL and the dance exhibit were great. Make sure to go upstairs and see where Lincoln had his Inaugural Ball. Such a pretty place. Take a docent tour, you learn so much in 45 min and it is all free!
