What an amazing show they had on American Cool with amazing American icons of music and movies. A must see! Plus they had some other great exhibits as well. Highly recommended.

I love, love the National Portrait Gallery! Inclusive of permanent and feature exhibits, this museum subtly conveys our American history through art and also cements the value of portraiture in our artistic wisdom. One benefit of this gallery, too, is its hours. It is often open later than the traditional Smithsonian Row spots so is a nice end-of-day option with other museums and galleries are closed. Especially if one is in town on business and misses the day time events, heading here for an hour or two end-of-day offers a cultural treat.

Beautiful architecturally. So interesting, especially the temporary exhibits. Well air-conditioned with no cost, only contributions if desired. Main hallways have rooms lateral to them holding the exhibits. Make sure you see the Presidents.

Don't be put off thinking it'll be just one stuffy portrait after another. It's so varied, so dazzling. It's more history through art. From Albert Einstein, Ab Lincoln to Bob Hope with a little bit of Madonna, these portraits capture some of American's greatest iconic figures as well as lesser known mortals such as, inventors, writers and scientists, who in their own right, are just as interesting to read about. The museum also houses, The Smithsonian American Art Museum. You won't be aware that you've walked into the other as they blend harmoniously together. Here you can admire sublime 19th C landscapes and exquisite still lifes to the ridiculous wall of multimedia sculptures of conceptual art. The pace, mood, era and subject matter changes at every turn, and you will never get bored.
