“Always New and Different. Nothing Compares!”
Reviewed 22 May 2008

This is my third stay at this magnificent property and it feels like my first time.

Everything in this wonderful place changes almost as if it is alive. Art, music, decor seem to change daily to make every day a new and different experience.

Visit The Mansion if you are looking for an "experience" there is no other place like it on earth!

Stayed here for 4 nights and are so glad we did. This place must be seen to be appreciated - no words can describe it. It changes daily and there is always something going on. We were given our choice of rooms, and shown around the entire Mansion upon arrival. Even after 4 days, we still got lost! Yes, there are secret doors, mirrors that are hidden doors, etc. The entire place is on display at all times - and it is so much FUN. Breakfast is a treat - make it yourself but all ingredients are there for you - all cut up and pre-prepared. We loved the personal attention and great service. Thank you to Ted and H, and your gracious staff!

We (me, my husband and parents) are planning a trip to DC for the Marine Marathon in October. My parents had stayed at The Mansion on O Street before and liked the property so my Mom gave them a call to inquire about room rates. (She is in her mid-50's, but just can't seem to get the whole computer thing :)

After contacting the property and speaking with two different people, including the owner's husband, my mom was guaranteed a discounted rate and asked to book it online. Scary for her (computer's)...but luckily she has my Dad to deal with such things.
After we booked on the website we received a confusing email rudely refusing the rate we were quoted. After some correspondence via email and a phone call they said we were never quoted that rate and basically called my mom a liar. (Seriously...she has more important things to do than make up a room rate.) They then said that if we wanted to stay there the rate was "X". Still discounted from the "rack rate", but NOT what we were quoted.

Okay fine...so we thought about it. My parents thought it was a very cool property so I was willing to go with the flow. However, I wanted to confirm that we would have king size beds (my husband is about to run a marathon and I want to make sure he would have nothing to complain about.)

My mom calls back again to confirm bed size and is told:

A) "Oh so you must be the lady we just talked about in our staff meeting"
B) They can not guarantee bed size for us "only for guests paying the non discounted rate" can be guaranteed a bed size.
C) "When you come for a visit we will need to teach you how to use email"

WOW...what ever happened to customer service? I am sure that it is a beautiful and interesting property, but to be spoken to in such a way is just completely unacceptable. Needless to say, we will not be staying at the Mansion on O Street.

I am not telling anyone not to stay there, but be aware that if they are willing to be so rude (not nasty), but rude and condescending before we even cross the threshold, I wonder what they will be like when you get there.

Condesending attitude, terrible service - there are MANY other places to stay in DC or have an event that are far more professional, offer more amenities, and better service. Do yourself a favor and look elsewhere.

If your idea of a great hotel is the cold perfection and utter predictability of the Ritz or Four Seasons then you might not enjoy the Mansion. At first we were a little intimidated about checking out all the rooms and relaxing. Once we relaxed and accepted that the owners really truly wanted us to treat this like our own home we had a blast. I understand the comments about the service but I learned that all you had to do was pick up the phone and your wish was immediately satisified. Although you may not see any staff they are always present and just staying out of your way. We went to DC to check out colleges with our 17 year old son. He loved the experience; playing pool in the Teddy Roosevelt Room and exploring all the hidden passageways. Every single person we met at the Mansion was kind and went out of their way to make sure we were ok. I was uncomfortable the 1st day when we went into the kitchen to eat breakfast. The coffee was already made. There were no signs anywhere telling you what to do i.e. what to do with your dirty dishes. So we just left them in the sink and there were soon gone.

You have to see this place to believe it. It is beyond description. The Sunday brunch is not to be missed.

Bottom line: if you are somewhat of a free spirit and looking for an incredible experience you should try the Mansion. If you are a person who is uncomfortable with something different stick with the chains.

This place is amazing. I've stayed in a hundred hotels and have never seen anything like this. Some of the rooms are average but the rest are unreal. Great location too. Can't comment on the service, but this place is a true one of a kind.
