“Characterful, but think it could do with some tweaks and improvements”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 April 2013

Ups and downs with this place. Either you'll see it as being 'characterful and quirky' or you'll think the place could do with a makeover. (You have to embrace the feeling that you're in a journalist in a John Le Carre or Graham Greene novel to enjoy it. If you're after a luxury stay, best to go elsewhere...)

Bags of character if you don't mind missing out on a few home comforts. My room was big and had a lovely old rocking chair. But the rooms are so dark. I mean there's 'atmosphere lighting' dark, and then there's 'I've dropped a sock and now I can't find it again' dark.

There's no TV, the phone isn't wireless, so you have to sit on the bed to use it. And my air conditioning broke in 30 degree heat. The handle of the hairdryer was so dirty I didn't want to touch it.

Out of four front desk staff I met, three were great and one was dreadful. Surly to the point of rudeness. I was prepared to be outraged, but then the other staff were much better.

The complimentary breakfast gives you four options, but I generally just paid for the main menu breakfast. However it was not a friendly menu for those trying to eat healthily - the only option with any fruit at all was a 'citrus cup' with orange and grapefruit segments. No option to have any fruit with the granola and yoghurt. Everything else was eggs. Also there is discrimination against tea-drinkers! Servers are strolling around topping up coffee mugs throuhout the breakfast sitting, whereas tea is served in a tiny pot the size of a thimble. Honestly - it isn't enough to fill up the mug fully.

spent 3 lovely days at this charming, historic inn - stayed in 32-tiny and comfortable-shared bath; and 40-very large, fireplace,2 beds-shared bath. Enjoyed tasty breakfasts (included) on patio, lounging in several of their many sitting areas, and one fabulous dinner in the dining room.......staff were helpful and accommodating-shared bath no problem - right next door and always available. Location is excellent. You need to be able to climb stairs - 4th floor was a long ways up but worth it! Staff was charming and helpful.

Room Tip: we had room 32, and then 40 - on the front side and were not bothered by noise-loved the view and...

I gave this place 3 stars because the negative aspects unfortunately balance the great aspects.
PROS: great location (if you want to be near DuPont Circle), big room, clean bathroom, great little restaurant, cozy character.
CONS: paid parking only available after 5pm, weird tub without a curtain which completely flooded the floor, dim rooms, staff not very helpful, no elevator, too expensive for the room.
I liked this place because it's cozy and cute, but it is too expensive for what you get. There is a way to maintain character and still have modern amenities (like bathroom that doesn't flood and track lighting for the rooms).
I would stay here again, if someone else (like work) was paying or if budget wasn't an issue. (My room was $229 for 1 person.)

Room Tip: Rooms looking out onto the street are nice. I had room 7, and it was huge.

Love the location of this place and the hotel itself is quaint but the staff....they ruin it. All but one (front desk guy) have the surliest attitudes. Our room was barely straightened up (we did most of the work before we left each day) and had to take our own glasses down each day to get clean ones and had to ask for water bottle refill each day. Really?! Getting breakfast in the morning served by the Grinch or Grinchess was not how we wanted to start our day but at some point we just started laughing about it. Whoever owns this place really needs to clean house or do some training. With this economy, I would imagine applications of qualified individuals with happy faces would be available. Peace to all.

I really like the Tabard Inn and have stayed there several times. On my most recent stay, I found the usual charm and coziness as well as the bustle of the bar/restaurant and great little spots for a late afternoon drink. The rooms are unique and each with their own charm but the CFL bulbs were just to dim especially coupled with heavy dark shades that the lamps often had. The bathroom was nice enough and likely re-done not that long ago but there was no shower curtain and there actually was a floor drain outside the tub. However, this didn't prevent the floor from getting totally soaked with some standing water. When we mentioned this to someone at the desk she commented that she had designed the room and looked at us like we were rubes for commenting about this. It really didn't take away from our appreciation of the place but these are 2 things to be ready for if you elect to stay there. We will probably stay there again. For the most part the front desk staff were very accomodating but I had to make our reservation on the phone as the website was giving conflicting information about availability. The person who took the reservation was curt and abrupt and I would call her a business killer if I owned the place.

Room Tip: Make sure your room has a shower curtain

Yes it gets crowded and loud, it is quite a social gathering place but there are plenty of nooks to accomodate quiet conversation. Just take the time to find them!

I have only had a light sample of the menu but it was superb.

The staff was very friendly and helpful, even considering the rowdy bunch I was with.

The lack of certain modern amenities is no secret, so be ready for long staircases with no elevators, no WiFi, no television (gasp!) and a shared bathroom for some rooms!

My favorite part of the Tabard is the bar which is on the way to the dining room. Order a screwdriver. They are made with fresh orange juice as in from an orange not a bottle.

Chew slowly and savor the food.

Speak slowly and savor the conversation.

Walk slowly and enjoy the decor.

This is the only place I stay in the Nation's Capitol.

Room Tip: Just ask for a different room than you had last time!! They are all very different.

The doughnuts ($1.50 each) are an absolute must. I ordered the eggs Benedict with smoked salmon and it was perfect: eggs were cooked to perfection and the salmon was a great addition to the classic. The waiting time is long (we waited for an hour), so plan ahead and go for a walk to the White House while you wait!
