I'm wondering if some of these overly negative reviews are too keep this hotel an insider's secret.
I had a last-minute solo business trip to DC, and had to find something cheap & centrally located. This place fit the bill. It is a converted historical townhouse, so the lobby check-in is the foyer, center hall. The wood floors under the carpet was creaky and uneven.
My room was the same size as the W Hotel in Union Sq. NYC - tiny. Probably was part of a parlor a century ago. My full-size bed had clean, white linens & comforter. The ornate window mouldings were painted over to oblivion, unfortunately. And the bathroom was clean enough but had not been updated since the 1980s.
When my flight was stranded in ORD & I couldn't arrive til the next day, the front desk made sure my room was ready at 7:45 am for check-in.
Whole Foods is around the corner & the neighborhood is upscale, no problems jogging late at night (I'm female).
So, in sum, no glamor here, and wouldn't recommend this for families, couples or elderly people who cannot hike up/down a big flight of stairs to entrance. It's strictly for individuals who need a day or two in the heart of the city, to maximize time and money.
