This hotel was clean and affordable. Not as close to National Mall and main attractions as other reviewers make it sound. We walked at least 6 miles in one day. The rooms are clean and quiet; never heard housekeeping staff rolling carts down hall or other patrons entering/exiting rooms as in some paper thin walled hotels. Staff was very, very friendly. Breakfast was great. Hot and cold items, as well as hard boiled eggs and microwaveable egg sandwiches. Would highly recommend this hotel if you don't mind walking through a slighly seedy neighborhood with pan handlers and a few homeless looking individuals.

Room Tip: We only paid $100 a night for room, however, parking is $33 for the car. OUCH.

We stayed at the Fairfield Inn, 500 H Street in Downtown D.C. from Aug. 30 to Sept. 2, 2011. Here are the highlights:
The hotel is located in Chinatown, which is northwest D.C. near the Verizon Center. Chinatown isn't big, but it's loaded with very affordable restaurants, mostly Asian (Try Full Kee, across H Street from the hotel. Very good.)
The closest Metro stop is a block away. If you prefer to walk, the National Mall is 10 to 15 minutes away through safe neighborhoods.
Chinatown itself is gentrifying rapidly. You will see some panhandlers -- one engaged us in conversation in an effort, successful I might add, to make a buck. But the neighborhood felt safe if a little raggedy at the edges.
The hotel staff was very friendly. The continental breakfast is the usual for a Fairfield -- make-your-own waffles, hot oatmeal, cold cereal, muffins, yogurt, bagels, bananas etc. The breakfast area does get crowded during the morning rush.
The rooms are done in understated Chinese motifs. We had a view of an alley, which wasn't a big deal to us, but if it matters, you might want to specify that you'd like a view of something else.
We paid $170 a night, although I know from other reviewers that there are times when better deals can be had. On top of the room rate, the parking fee is $33 a day, and includes valet service. We decided to park the car ourselves at the nearby Gallery Place garage and hoof it. The 24-hour charge there is $22, so we saved $11 a day.
The attractions closest to the hotel include the Verizon Center (where the NBA team plays and they have concerts and so forth), the National Portrait gallery (terrific art museum) and the National Building Musem (we didn't make it there.)
Considering the convenient location, the renovated rooms and the accommodating staff, I'd say the Fairfield is a good choice for someone looking to stay in central D.C. for under $200 a night.

Room Tip: If you're impatient, request a low floor. Otherwise, you'll spend a lot of time waiting for...

This hotel is in Chinatown, 2 blocks from the metro and the Verizon Center. The front staff is wonderful! The rooms very comfortable and quiet. We were right above the Irish bar with live music every night, it was still quiet for us. There is a nice breakfast in the lobby every morning with delicious coffee. The hotel staff is very attentive during the breakfast hours, restocking and refreshing everything. I would highly recommend this hotel and at $89/night a real bargain in the DC metro area. If you are persistent, there is free street parking at night (until 6:59 am) but if you are careless, the meter maids are aggressively giving tickets. The hotel has valet parking at rates equal to the lots/garages in the area. An easy and effortless way to contain your car. A word of caution, at night, walk in well-lit areas and mind your valuables. This is a large city with large city crime.

Room Tip: book early and get Marriott email alerts for special rates

This hotel has a great location in Chinatown and is near Metro and numerous attractions. Limos were disgorging teased-hair Brittney Spears fans at the Verizon Center when we stayed here. The are plenty of good restaurant choices nearby and I'd suggest Kanlaya Thai across the street. The hotel was busy but served its purpose. I probably won't be back. The free breakfast in the morning was a full contact sport and, frankly, we weren't up to taking out somebody to grab the last muffin or bagel. For a low price this hotel is a good deal.

Stayed here for two nights to attend a conference at the DC Convention Center. The hotel is a few blocks from the Convention Center -- it's not too bad of a walk. I really liked the hotel decor -- it was perfect for Chinatown. Lots of great shopping and restaurant choices nearby, and the metro is just a short walk away. The free breakfast was good - they had breakfast sandwiches you could heat up along with the standard free breakfast fare.

I stayed here for one night while attending an event at the Verizon Center. Got a great $94/night AAA rate. Location could not be better with Verizon just around the corner, Metro right there and restaurants in abundance. The hotel is brand new and the decor matches the Chinatown neighborhood it's in. My king bed room was a bit smallish but quite functional--including a sofa. The room was very clean. There is a nice complimentary breakfast, but the hotel seemed full and the breakfast room was extremely crowded. All in all a gem of a hotel. I highly recommend it!

Hip decor (at a Marriott no less)! Well thought out rooms and lobby. Terrific staff. Great price! This was my 60th night at a Marriott this year and it ranks defnitely at the top of the list.
