“Small but nice”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 July 2013

This museum was nice, but small. Not a lot to see, but the building and presentation of the art work was beautiful. The current traveling exhibit was furniture, fairly interesting.

“Gorgeous building, great art”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 June 2013 via mobile

This is one of the smaller Smithsonian museums, and it's a little off the beaten track compared to the flagship museums on the mall. I went at a peak time for visitors, a summer Saturday afternoon, and was pleasantly surprised at how quiet and uncrowded it was. The art is interesting, the building is a gem, and the museum store has great stuff in a range of price points. Highly recommended.

“Beautiful architecture, wonderful art...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 May 2013

Small & personal. You don't become overwhelmed, you get a chance to focus on the beauty inside and out. The works are diverse and offer something for the traditionalist and the modernist. The Thomas Day furniture exhibit currently on display shows the excellent craftsmanship of the man and ot the times. A must see in close proximity to the White House.

“Quiet Reflection”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 May 2013

This small art museum can be a relaxing venue if you are looking to escape the crowds in the mega museums and spend time reflecting on the objects and paintings displayed there. Some rooms have videos showing a craftsperson at work.

I particularly liked "reclining glass dress with tapestry", I think is the correct name. One video had an interview with the artist. For me, that was a highlight.

The White House is just a half block down the street, if you want to gaze at it through the fence, as many people were doing the afternoon I walked over there. At this writing, no visitors are permitted inside. That's quite a change from 1967 when I toured several rooms with others on a bus tour. No reservation. No searches. The bus just drove up the driveway and let us off at the front door.

Blair House, where visiting dignitaries reside, is next to the Renwick gallery. Several plaques on it explain its use and history.

“Lovely, but small American crafts museum”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 April 2013

I would give the Renwick a solid "B" for it's lovely collection of American crafts/decorative arts. The only drawback is that it is such a small museum, that it leaves you wanting more. Their shows are always well-curated and of top quality -- but it's just not enough. Expand this museum -- Washington deserves more!
