Owner description: The Shakespearean collection at the Folger Library the worlds largest is only open to the more qualified researcher, but theres still plenty to see, like gardens, Renaissance art and an Elizabethan theater.

For those with theater or literature in their blood ..this is a lovely respite from the crowds of the Nat'l Mall. Tours are given daily by a docent and are only 45-60 mins long. It is a lovely library with a glimpse into the reading room used for free,by academics doing research. Mr Folger was a Standard Oil head who collected and donated all the manuscripts, etc here, over 275k! It is located in a lovely neighborhood directly behind the Library of Congress. we had a sidewalk cafe breakfast at the Firehook Cafe and walked over to the library for a relaxing morning tour.

My boyfriend and I went to see Othello and he returned from his latest deployment and we both had a great time. We had great seats and although the theater is small I didn't feel smothered by other patrons.

Proud to be a member. We try to schedule trips around the play. "The Gaming Table" was stellar. Never been disappointed. Top quality entertainment. Museum is for thinkers.

Finally found a play being presented at the theater in the Folger Shakespeare Library on a weekend when we were visiting DC. The Folger has been on my list of places to visit for years. The building is located on the far (east) side of the Capitol, near the Supreme Court building and the Library of Congress.
We walked from Union Station (another favorite grand old building) past the Supreme Court which looked fantastically majestic in the moonlight. The Folger itself is a beautiful building, with carved wood panelling down a long gallery with 400-500 year old manuscripts and good clear interpretive labels.
The theater is a small gallery style theater (with seats only on two or three levels), also all polished carved wood, a very interesting and unique venue for a good performance.
Gift shop at the end of the exhibit gallery was small but items were well chosen.
This is not the highest priority destination for one of your first visits to DC, but I found it very memorable and rewarding to visit, especially with the play as a reason.
