We didn't know what to expect from Bistro Cacao. Reviews on several websites gave it mixed blessings. We were pleasantly surprised this converted row house served excellent french cuisine ! Absolutely fantastique ! Service was great too ! If foodies are looking for a place to try out or you're looking for some place romantic for a special occassion, this is the place for you! We'll definitely be back soon !

This restaurant recently moved into two adjacent Victorian row houses that were vacated by Two Quail, which was a French restaurant that was somewhat hit-or-miss.

The new restaurant's atmosphere is very romantic, with booths in dark wood, comfy arm chairs at the tables, and red drapes to increase privacy. The arm chair I got was a little low for the table, but it had pillows that I could sit on to get a good eating height. There is interesting original art hung on the walls, which are decorated with European-looking wallpaper. I recommend you check out the photos on their website to see if you like the atmosphere; I did, but it might be too dark and old-world for some folks.

To start I had the Salad Cacao, which was mesculun greens with palm hearts, grapes, and goat cheese in a vinaigrette. Everything was extremely fresh, and the flavors were well balanced. For a main course I had the rack of lamb, which had a strong but tasty mustard crust. The lamb portions were just right --not too much, not too skimpy--and perfectly prepared, with delicious, lightly cooked vegetables to complement. The waiter recommended a glass of wine from the list that was a wonderful match. The pear tart for dessert was sweet but not overpowering.

Most pleasantly surprising of all were the prices. Appetizers & salads were about $7-10, entrees $15-22, and desserts about $8. A very good value for fine French food in a romantic venue.
