Owner description: The well-preserved former house of President Woodrow Wilson.

We found our way to the Wilson House on MLK weekend, arriving near closing without knowing that it is generally shown by a 1-hour guided tour. The woman in charge was very gracious and offered us a "quick" tour.

The experience is very personal, a step back in time. The wow factor is the pervading sense of the President who lived here for a few years after his time in the White House.

It will never be on anyone's Top Ten list of things to do in DC, nevertheless it is very compelling. We strongly recommend adding it to your must see list.

My wife and I arrived at the home late Tuesday morning and were greeted by two wonderful volunteers, who love their job and show it as they give the tour. You first see a short film about the life of Wison and then are taken on the house tour by one of the two volunteers. The house is filled with the possessions of the family, which is great, because on most house tours, you are seeing period pieces and not the family possessions. The guide is open to any questions and knows the answers to all of them. You get a true feeling for the family man as well as the politician. My wife and I are trying to visit all the presidential homes and so far, we have 31. This tour ranks up in the top three. Oh yes, they allow you to take photos throughout the house!

Woodrow Wilson is the only president to have lived in DC after his presidency. Wilson is the only president buried in DC. Wilson's widow lived in this house until her death in 1961. Most of the artifacts in the house are original. When I went, I was the only one there, receiving a one-on-one tour with a friendly, longtime expert on the house and on Wilson. There's a worthwhile brief film to watch beforehand. There's a small gift shop. The neighborhood is safe, and just several blocks from Dupont Circle. Whether you admire Wilson or not, visiting here is an interesting glimpse into his life and an elegant home from the 1920s.

Glad you enjoyed your tour! Wilson is the only president to have remained permanently in DC after his presidency, but President Taft lived in the neighborhood when he was Chief Justice of the Supreme Court - you can walk by his house on Wyoming St (now a private home) if you visit us again.

The Holidays Through History event is a great time to visit our house along with Tudor Place, Anderson House and Dumbarton House. We love decorating our museum for a 1920s Christmas. The event is usually the first or second weekend of December every year. Glad you enjoyed it!

Kudos to the volunteers and paid pros who keep Wilson's legacy alive here. The tour emphasizes each room's artifacts with factual and sometimes amusing anecdotes. If you are learning about this Prez, be sure to couple this site with a visit to WW's birth place in Staunton, VA
Both make a great historical combo. You can also cross the WW bridge in between.
