“Great live jazz & dinner at Westminster's Jazz Fridays-steps from the Mall”

Jazz Night at Westminster Presbyterian Church
Attraction details
Reviewed 23 February 2013

The quartet performing had some folks dancing in the aisles, pleasing the crowd with some saucy numbers, plus some touching ballads we all knew. The pianist, the base and sax and chanteuse were all great. This church has good acoustics, is attractive, easy to reach and also offers an inexpensive, tasty dinner in the community room, great way to spend an evening, very congenial. Especially recommended for Jazz buffs from out of town to enjoy a very neighborly facet of life here in DC. Westminster also offers Blues Night on Mondays, 6-9PM as well.

If you enjoy jazz or the blues, this is for you. Jazz is 6pm Friday and Blue is 6pm Monday. Still only $5 donation. Top flight talent, and a spirited, friendly crowd. On Friday, get there a little early for a good seat. Just one block from the Waterfront station on Metro's green line. A variety of food, at a reasonable price, is served in the church basement. Most folks attending are regulars from the DC area, but visitors will be welcomed.

I am a regular here on Friday nights even though I live in the suburbs over 20 miles away. The musicians are the best in town and the people couldn't be more welcoming. I make it a point to always take relatives and guests here whenever they visit DC. But then, I buy the dinner. This is a must visit if ever you are in DC. If you are a local, "What are you waiting for?" (This is your invitation)

I stumbled across this on trip advisor and am glad I did. We went on Blues Monday night and the music was wonderful. The church was packed but friendly and welcoming. We were greeted like old friends even though we were tourists. The food was excellent, especially the fried fish. Don't skip desert, my friend had the sweet potato pie and I had the bread pudding and both tasted home-made. Then it was back upstairs for the rest of the concert, clapping, dancing in the aisles and generally having a good time. I can't emphasize enough how friendly everyone was. I felt like we were in the "real" Washington.

A great place for tourists and locals to rest your feet, sup on a hearty meal, and restore the musical soul in you while taking in some very live jazz up close. The Friendly audience clearly is loyal for good reason, it's cheap, very casual, and delivers good music pretty consistently with groups both local and from out of town. People of all ages and incomes present, and there's frequent nice give-and-take between the musicians and audience. The Hall is the church, a modern attractive one with good acoustics. Very affordable prices-entrance is $5. No alcoholic beverages available. Westminster plans to launch an outdoor cafe at some point this year. Tourists take note: it's walkable from the National Mall, and it's a great way to top off a day of touring any Friday or Monday.
